MEMORISE
That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
Hebrews 6:12

READ
Matthew 4:1-4

1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.

2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.

3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

MESSAGE
One common point of weakness in the life of many believers today is impatience. It is unfortunate that this weak point is being exploited by the devil to prey on believers. The tempter sometimes capitalises on the fact that a believer is hungry, to tempt him or her to “turn stone into bread”. At such moments, the believer should react like his Master did in Matthew 4:4c by saying this in response:

“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”

But what do we see today? Some couples go all out in search of the fruit of the womb when there is an apparent delay. This they do in spite of numerous scriptural passages that enjoin us to patiently run the race that is set before us (Hebrews 12:1). The Bible in Genesis 41:1 says:

“And it came to pass at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh dreamed: and, behold, he stood by the river.”

This scriptural passage speaks volumes and our understanding of its deep meaning will go a long way to cure us of the spiritual disease of impatience. Whatever and however terrible the situation a child of God is passing through, the promise of God is that it shall not last forever; rather it shall come to pass! Two full years passed from the commencement of Joseph’s expectation of release from prison to the time Pharaoh had the dream that would eventually set him free.

Why is the Christian life characterised by challenges? It is because the world hates the godly lifestyle of a believer. It takes determination for believers to stand in the face of adversities which the world puts as a stumbling block to cause their fall. This is why Jesus Christ prayed for believers in John 17:15-16 saying:

“I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.”

Beloved, let us keep on looking unto Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith, who was once tempted like us, but remained determined to endure everything for our sake. And because he was victorious, we shall be victorious; for the scripture in Romans 8:37 says this concerning us:

“Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.”

PRAYER POINT

Holy Spirit Divine, please see me through the challenges of life with your comfort and guidance.

MEMORISE
God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
John 4:24

READ
John 4:21-24

21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.

22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.

23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

MESSAGE
Today you will observe with dismay how some people counterfeit the true worship of God in the name of religion. The reason for this phenomenon is not farfetched. They worship in the flesh and not in the spirit. This is the reason Jesus told Nicodemus in John 3:5b that:

“Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.”

This also was the message of Jesus Christ to the religiously minded people of His days, as well as the message of the early apostles. They played down the paraphernalia of religious practices that did not connote spiritualism. They worshipped in truth and in spirit. How can we put an end to carnal religiosity in our churches today? The solution is simple: we must go back to the basics of Christian teaching as outlined in Acts 2:37-38:

“Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.“

It is a pity that people do not know or have forgotten that genuine repentance is the foundation of the faith that saves. Covering up our past misdeeds without repentance is a waste of time. The Holy Spirit emphasises this truth through Apostle John in 1 John 1:6-9:

“If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

The problem with many 21st century so-called Christian worshippers is that they no longer admit sin to be sin; they trivialise sin and regard it as unavoidable “mistakes”, hence, they neither confess it as sin nor strive to live above it with the power of the Holy Ghost. This explains the carnal worship and “plenty-rascality” in the name of Pentecostalism that we observe in some of our churches. Remember the works of the flesh in Galatians 5:19-21. These are the things we must not entangle ourselves with if we would worship God in spirit and in truth. You must be born of the Spirit and live a life of change for acceptable worship in the sight of God.

ACTION POINT

Read Galatians 5:19-23, identify the works of the flesh still manifesting in your life and pray for power to live above them.

THE PEACE OF GOD.

MEMORISE : And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4 : 7.

READ : PHILIPPIANS 4 : 4 – 8.

4 Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.

5 Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.

6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR : EZEKIEL 19 – 20; PSALM 69 : 22 – 36.

There is nothing tangible that can be achieved in an organisation, family or mind without a peaceful atmosphere. This is why when the world was characterised with chaos in Genesis 1 : 1 – 3, the first thing God did was to restore peace to the chaotic world. I pray that the peace of God will be your portion today in Jesus’ Name. There are factors that can guarantee peace in the life of an individual, particularly a child of God. One of them is contentment. 1 Timothy 6 : 6 & 10 says that :

“But godliness with contentment is great gain. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”

Many people lack peace because they are not contented with what they have. They dabble into some nefarious activities in search of the material things of this world which lead to stress related diseases. We must beware not to run after the material things of this world which do not bring satisfaction, or those things that attract undue responsibilities, or those things that hurt when they have flown away. Also, avoid the abuse of things which bring discomfort like piles or stomach aches and other illnesses to your body ( Proverbs 25 : 16 ). How do you cultivate contentment? Contentment is developed when you endeavour to enjoy the present blessings of God in your life and give Him glory for such benefits ( Ecclesiastes 5 : 18 – 19, Psalm 103 : 1 – 5 ).

“Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”
Philippians 4 : 5 – 6

Other truths about having peace are revealed in this passage: One of such truths is that, to have the peace of God, you have to be moderate in your lifestyle without hypocrisy. Another is: do not be anxious for anything, or else you will lose your God-given peace. How then do you survive in a competitive world where the essential things of life are scarce? The next truth answers this: make your request known to God. He is Jehovah-Jireh, the Great Provider. He will meet you at the point of your needs. It is when we obey what the Holy Spirit admonishes us to do here that the peace of God will keep our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. I pray for you that the peace of God will come mightily upon your troubled body, soul and spirit today in Jesus’ Name.

PRAYER POINT :

Pray for the peace of God to reign in your entire life, family, church and nation today.

MEMORISE
Remember me, O my God, for good.
Nehemiah 13:31b

READ
1 Samuel 1:17-19

17 Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.

18 And she said, Let thine handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad.

19 And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before the LORD, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her.

MESSAGE
One truth the children of God must continue to remember is that it takes divine remembrance to daily experience deliverance in their lives and ministries. The best way to explain this is to interpret “remembrance” as “attention”, because God is never forgetful. In Isaiah 49:15 God said:

“Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.”

So, God does not forget, but He may decide to ignore you if you continue to live in sin.

One person that experienced divine remembrance was Hannah. The Lord remembered Hannah by paying attention to her prayer in answer to Eli’s prayer. 1 Samuel 1:17 says:

“Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.”

Hannah was under the bondage of barrenness for several years, but when God remembered her, she was delivered from the bondage of unfruitfulness. To someone using this devotional, I pray that the Almighty will remember and deliver you from all forms of bondage today in Jesus’ Name. Let us learn from Hannah what she did to draw divine attention to herself and her situation. First, she prayed earnestly and fasted for God’s attention. At times we need to demonstrate our seriousness concerning what we really want God to do for us by embarking on prayer and fasting. Jesus taught His disciples this truth in Mark 9:29. In addition, for God to remember you in your unpleasant situation, you have to cooperate with Him by playing your own role. My experiences have revealed to me the mistakes some children of God make as they expect God to play their own roles together with His. This ended at Calvary where God suffered as a man, but there He declared: IT IS FINISHED. If you are looking for a job, write applications and go out to attend interviews because God will not write an application letter for you, neither will He attend the interview on your behalf. Sufficient is the fact that He will back you up during the interview. The Bible reveals something that many may not pay attention to which, of course, was fundamental to the divine remembrance of Hannah. What is it? 1 Samuel 1:19d says that:

“……and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her.”

What could have happened to Hannah’s prayer if she and her husband did not play their part in this regard? Beloved, let us cooperate with God, He will remember us for good in Jesus’ Name.

ACTION POINT

Pray, fast and take steps under the guidance of the Holy Spirit concerning that situation that is bothering you. You will experience divine remembrance and deliverance.

MEMORISE
And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that was with him in the ark: and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters asswaged;
Genesis 8:1

READ
Genesis 8:1-4

1 And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that was with him in the ark: and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters asswaged;

2 The fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained;

3 And the waters returned from off the earth continually: and after the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters were abated.

4 And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat.

MESSAGE
When the world was in enmity with God and He decided to destroy it by a flood, Noah found favour in the sight of the Lord according to Genesis 6:5-8. Though Noah and his family escaped from the flood, they were however caged in the ark, which of course would have become something else after some days of eating and passing of body waste in the ark. God remembered Noah and all the living things with him in the ark. May the Good Lord remember you for good today in Jesus’ Name. There are some revelations we can catch in this story. One of such is that when God remembers an individual in trouble and bondage, the following things would happen: the wind of the Holy Spirit will blow away all the challenging situations (Genesis 8:1); the terrible waters will be dried up and the fellow will escape being drowned (Genesis 8:2). Moreover, the tempestuous life will become peaceful (Genesis 8:4).

Beloved of the Lord, there are conditions for God’s remembrance to facilitate deliverance as experienced by Noah and his family. One of such conditions is godly living, even in the midst of a perverted generation of men. It is a pity that many children of God in the 21st century live ungodly lives with the excuse that the world is perverted. Jesus Christ said Noah will be a witness against these so-called children of God who would attribute their worldly and ungodly living to the fact that their world was ungodly (Matthew 24:37-39). Pay attention to God’s testimony concerning Noah:

“And the LORD said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation.”
Genesis 6:9

Another of these conditions is a life of worship. God must see in you the desire to worship Him before He can remember you for good, because He is a prudent investor (Genesis 8:20-22). I pray for you that the Almighty God will remember you for deliverance today in Jesus’ Name. Please ensure you live a godly life and cultivate the habit of intense worship. You will then experience divine remembrance.

PRAYER POINT

Father, remember me this day and deliver me from all my oppressors in Jesus’ Name.

And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.
Luke 23:42

READ
Luke 23:40-43

40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?

41 And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss.

42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.

43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

MESSAGE
When God remembers a sinner for good, He forgives that sinner, forgets his past sins and delivers him or her completely from the power of sin that has enslaved him or her for a long time. When God remembered the mercies He promised His people – Luke 1:72-75, He forgave the woman caught in adultery and empowered her to “go and sin no more” (John 8:10-11). A very important thing to note here is that two different types of divine remembrance cannot clash in an individual’s life. It is either God remembers the sins of an individual, closes the door of mercy and gets the individual punished, or He remembers His mercies and forgets the sins the individual has committed after genuine repentance (Ezekiel 33:13-16).

The robber in our Bible reading was remembered and was saved. There are lessons to be learnt from the robber on the right hand of the Cross. One of such lessons is that God is not only capable to save but is ever ready to save. The robber said: “Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom”, and Jesus responded immediately: “Today you will be with me in paradise”. It was as if Jesus was waiting for the robber to speak. Certainly Jesus wanted to rubbish the devil who might have been rejoicing that he was about to receive one more soul into the kingdom of hell. Jesus however snatched that soul from hell at the last minute. The good thing was that the One who paid the price in full was also the One who appropriated the benefit of the atonement on the robber. So there was nothing the devil could do. Another good thing about divine remembrance for salvation is that the process is simple. Genuine turn-around from wickedness to godliness (i.e. repentance) will earn earnest seekers of salvation divine remembrance. Zacchaeus was one of such seekers who genuinely repented after meeting the Lord. As a mark or repentance, of his own volition, he said to the Lord in Luke 19:8b:

“Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.”

Immediately the Lord in Luke 19:9-10 replied:

“…This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

How pleasant it would be, if as many as are reading this devotional, who are yet to experience salvation through Christ, would cry to Jesus today and say, “Lord remember me for your salvation”. No doubt, there would be joy in heaven today (Luke 15:7)!

PRAYER POINT

Pray that the Almighty God will touch all members of your family for genuine salvation today.

MEMORISE
Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
2 Timothy 4:2

READ
Luke 8:38-40

38 Now the man out of whom the devils were departed besought him that he might be with him: but Jesus sent him away, saying,

39 Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee. And he went his way, and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him.

40 And it came to pass, that, when Jesus was returned, the people gladly received him: for they were all waiting for him.

MESSAGE
There is one great sin of omission that contemporary followers of Jesus Christ are guilty of. We enjoy God’s grace, forgiveness, healing, breakthrough, peace and joy but fail to share the good news with others so that they may become beneficiaries of the benevolence of the Almighty God. We tend to take interest in staying in our beautiful cathedrals. When we are sent to go out and pioneer Churches in rural areas where people are in need of the gospel, we see it as punishment! We tend to enjoy listening to powerful, motivational sermons from our fathers in the Lord and their associates – tapping from their anointing on daily basis but refusing to go and share part of what we have received. What a crime of omission.

Our Bible reading reveals one fundamental obligation of every genuine Christian which unfortunately, many children of God do not pay close attention to. A demoniac encountered Jesus Christ in this story and immediately fell in love with Jesus and His company. This man wanted to stay with Jesus, but He commissioned him to go and spread the good news of his deliverance among his people. This is exactly what our Lord expects of us as His followers. This injunction however, does not encourage forsaking Jesus Christ to become independent or to begin to do whatever we like; Jesus spoke against such attitude in John 15:4-5. In Mark 16:15b He also said:

“Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.”

Whenever we comply with this injunction, we do not only make our Lord happy, we also make His benevolence known. After the witnessing of the demoniac, the Bible reports in Luke 8:40 that:

“And it came to pass, that, when Jesus was returned, the people gladly received him: for they were all waiting for him.”

When we do what we ought to do on the field of evangelism, many good things will happen. First, darkness will give way for the light of the gospel. Secondly, Jesus Christ will be Lord wherever the gospel is preached. Thirdly, in anticipation of the second coming of our Lord, people will be conscious of what they do in the society. Lastly, the world will be a better place to live in. Therefore beloved of the Lord, I encourage you to begin to spread the good news of what the Lord has done for you and what He is capable of doing for others too, all in the light of His gospel. God bless you as you do so in Jesus’ Name.

MEMORISE
And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Acts 2:21

READ
Matthew 24:29-30

29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

MESSAGE
The Bible predicts that a lot of problems and calamities will befall the world as the judgment day approaches. For example, Prophet Joel in Joel 2:30-31, predicted that the Lord will show divers wonders in the cosmos and on earth:

“And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.”

Our Lord Jesus Christ also did not hide this reality from us, as we read in today’s Bible passage. The apostles also were not kept in the dark concerning the pending doom that is to come upon the earth and its inhabitants. Peter in 2 Peter 3:10 wrote that:

“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.”

The fact therefore is: there shall be tribulation.

The question then is: “Is there no way of escaping these calamities since the word of the Lord cannot but come to pass?” We may need to ask another question and that is: “What can one do to escape these inevitable disasters that are not only gathering momentum but are already here with us?” Glory be to God Almighty, who is full of tender mercies and loving kindness. He provides a way of escape in Joel 2:32a:

“And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered:”

The onus therefore is on us to cry to him for pardon if we do not want to be part of the terrible happenings in these last days. How then should we call upon the Lord? We should call upon the Lord in repentance and holy living. Every man and woman, boy and girl must repent to escape from the wrath to come. The Bible in 2 Peter 3:11 says that:

“Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,”

NOURISHED BUT FRUITLESS?
BY PASTOR E.A. ADEBOYE

MEMORISE
Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.
John 15:16

READ
Luke 13:6-9

Luk 13:6 He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none.

Luk 13:7 Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground?

Luk 13:8 And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it:

Luk 13:shalt cut it down.

MESSAGE
Jesus Christ who had cursed a fig tree in Mark 11:14 for being unfruitful, gives the parable of a well-nurtured fig tree which had nothing to show for the nourishment given by its owner in Luke 13:6-7. The reaction of the owner of this fig tree is our point of study today. This farm owner in Luke 13:7b said:

“Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground?”

He was expectant of pleasant fruits based on his efforts to cause the tree to bear fruits, but sadly, the tree failed to meet his expectations. His reaction was that the fig tree should be cut down.

Beloved, the Bible in 1 Corinthians 3:9 says that you are God’s husbandry. God is the husbandman; you are the lively tree being nurtured since the day of your birth, and particularly, since the time you gave your life to Christ. That you are alive to see this day is a pointer to the fact that you have received both physical and spiritual nourishment up till date. The question is: are you nourished yet fruitless? The husbandman said: “cut it down”. This is serious. May we not be cut down in Jesus’ Name. Amen. The practical “Amen” to this prayer is simply turning away from a life of fruitlessness and beginning to bear fruit. To those who have not had a serious commitment to Jesus Christ through genuine repentance, the Bible in Matthew 3:8&10 says:

“Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance: And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.”

To those of us who by the grace of God are children by the Spirit of God, Jesus said in John 15:4:

“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.”

Therefore, let us give ourselves completely to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Let us begin to go the “extra mile” with Him. The reward is certainly sure. Apart from the avoidance of being cut down and of being thrown into the fire, Jesus in today’s memory verse promised that you will not be denied good things of life if you bear good fruits.

THE COST OF ETERNAL LIFE
BY PASTOR E.A. ADEBOYE

MEMORISE
And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:
Mark 9:47

READ
Matthew 13:45-46

45 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls:
46 Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

MESSAGE
Jesus Christ gave a parable in our Bible reading today on the importance of making sure we are not exempted from the kingdom of God. He likened the kingdom of God to a precious pearl that a rich merchant sought for, and after he had found it, went and sold all that he had just to buy it. In Mark 9:47, Jesus gave another serious instruction, showing just how important it is for everyone to strive to gain entrance into the kingdom of God. He said that if your eye, as precious and important to living as it is, will disqualify you from gaining entry into the presence of God at the end of your life, you should pluck it out! This is food for thought when we observe how careless we could be when it comes to the matter of making it to Heaven at the end of life. We seem to trivialise the problem of sin and what sin is capable of doing against our souls.

“But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Revelation 21:8

It is unfortunate that modern day theologians are writing and teaching people to be comfortable in their sinful lifestyle. They are explaining away the reality of Heaven and Hell. These two realms are real; they should not be explained away. As we continue to live on this planet earth, we should always remember that we do not have a permanent stay here. No matter how blessed we are with long life, eternity is not here on this present earth. A new earth and a new heaven are in the making for us according to Revelation 21:1-2. Therefore, whatever will disqualify you from gaining entry into the new earth and the new heaven should be discarded immediately. The reason is not far-fetched; death may come at any given time and the expected tomorrow may not come. Failure to enter to the kingdom of God leaves room only for the second option which is disastrous – hell. Today is the day of salvation, now is the acceptable time. Every weight that besets us must be done away with in accordance with the admonition in Hebrews 12:1:

“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,”

PRAYER POINT

Father, please grant me strength in my inner man to stop doing whatever I am doing that will make me a candidate for hell, in Jesus’ Name.

READ
Luke 12:13-15

13 And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me.

14 And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you?

15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

MESSAGE
One of the challenges of the 21st century world and the Church in particular is covetousness. Worldliness is now the greatest foe of the Church and it seems leaders are becoming helpless in this regard. The amazing thing is that this seemingly helpless situation had been spoken of by the Lord of the Church – Jesus Christ, and by His early apostles. It is therefore incorrect to think that the present situation is irredeemable. Jesus warned us against covetousness in Luke 12:13-15. It is surprising to hear Jesus indirectly telling His audience that the man who came to complain about his brother’s overbearing attitude was covetous. Not many people will understand this except by divine revelation. In other words, it appears in this passage that the complainant was asking for too much! It takes covetousness to ask for too much. The vanity in being covetous is that the life of a man is neither made more meaningful nor pleasant by the abundance of his material possessions. The Bible in Ecclesiastes 5:10-11 says:

“He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity. When goods increase, they are increased that eat them: and what good is there to the owners thereof, saving the beholding of them with their eyes?”

Apostle Paul, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, wrote to warn us against the menace of worldliness and covetousness. He encouraged us to embrace godliness with contentment which, he said, is great gain. He further wrote in 1 Timothy 6:9 that:

“But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.”

Beloved, how far have you been dragged into the world? How far has the world been dragged into you? Those things that did not matter to you years back, are they not what you are running after now? Remember that the rich people of yesterday ran into the Church before they could have peace and satisfaction. They envied believers and came to share in our heritage. Good for them, but bad for those of us who have thrown away the peace and joy that money cannot buy for the vanity of this world.

MESSAGE
When God speaks, that settles it. He reigns forever. When He gives a decree, it is forever. When He says “surely”, it means surely. When He says surely, it will be well with me, nobody can change it. He says surely, by His stripes I am healed, and nobody can change this. He says surely, everything I do shall prosper, and nobody can change this. This assurance can be yours too. Provided you dwell in the secret place of the Most High and you abide under the shadow of the Almighty, surely, all shall be well. But if tomorrow you decide to go back from Jesus, it is entirely a different matter. No doubt, there are enemies pillaging the lives of unsuspecting victims and careless children of God. Satan is their garrison commander. According to 1 Chronicles 21:1:

“And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel.”

It was Satan who plotted against Israel but it was David who did the actual numbering of Israel. Satan will always use somebody against you. He sets traps for people by luring them with bait.

In our Bible reading today, our Lord Jesus Christ gave us the assurance of victory and deliverance from the onslaught of our enemies. It is interesting that demons which Satan uses to kill, maim and destroy lives, are what our Lord Jesus Christ gave us authority to cast out in Luke 9:1:

“Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.”

Take note of the fact that Jesus gave power and authority over all devils; all without exception. This indicates that it is a sheer waste of time to be asking demons or their victims such questions as: ‘What is your name?’ ‘Where do you live?’ In as much as the authority and power given to us covers all devils, it is wisdom to exercise it without limit. In the same vein, our Lord gave us power and authority to cure diseases – diseases in plural form! This is the assurance we have, that we should no longer be living at the mercy of the devil. Deliverance is a divine assurance for all believers that know their God. Let it be said on the mountains and in the valleys that Christians should not be living at the mercy of the devil any more. Also, let Christians take the battle to the gates of the enemy because victory is guaranteed in Jesus’ Name. The good news is that God can deliver you from every form of demonic possession. He will deliver you from all forms of diseases and demon-possession if you are already trapped. Call upon Him today and He will answer you.

READ
2 Samuel 22:1-4

1 And David spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul:

2 And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer;

3 The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence.

4 I will call on the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

MESSAGE
The Most High God is our fortress. What is a fortress? A fortress is a stronghold where you can fight from. After you have been in a refuge for some time and you are now prepared for battle, the place of refuge can become your fortress. A fortress is where you are to put on your armour, consolidate all your strengths and then go out to battle. The Almighty God is not only my refuge but He is also my fortress. This speaks of His Almightiness. Jehovah-Nissi is not just a defensive God; He can equally be on the offensive! He is the Divine Garrison for genuine children of God. The God who told Elijah to go and hide was also the One who told him to go forth and fight after some time. In 1 Kings 18:40, we see a different Elijah:

“And Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.”

The time of hiding was over and it was time to go to battle. We also have another example in 1 Samuel 17:43-45. Here we see how God can be a fortress. Goliath cursed David by the name of his gods and David handed Goliath into the hands of the Lord of Hosts. Goliath came to David with sword, spear and with a shield; but David confronted Goliath with the Name of the Lord of Hosts and of the God of the armies of Israel. While Goliath was disappointed by his gods, sword, spear and shield, David was protected by the everlasting arms of the Almighty.

If you pay close attention to the memory verse of today, you will discover something intriguing about our God who has never lost a battle. David discovered this truth and he asked God to be his strong habitation where he can continually resort to. No wonder the Bible says because you have made the Lord your habitation, there shall no evil befall you (Psalm 91:9-10). To make the Almighty God your habitation, you must live holy because He is holy. Some people may not accept an invitation to spend their vacation in the house of an important personality who is noted for cleanliness because of their dirty habits. Don’t continue to short-change yourself of the privilege of living with the King of kings and the Lord of lords. When you make God your fortress, He will deliver you from the unrighteous and cruel men of your generation. My prayer for you is that your changed life will qualify you to have God as your habitation in Jesus’ Name.

ACTION POINT

Take an inventory of your life and see what may disqualify you from having your abode with the Lord of Hosts. Take positive steps to change immediately.

19 Then the king arose very early in the morning, and went in haste unto the den of lions.

20 And when he came to the den, he cried with a lamentable voice unto Daniel: and the king spake and said to Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God, whom thou servest continually, able to deliver thee from the lions?

21 Then said Daniel unto the king, O king, live for ever.

22 My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions’ mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt.

MESSAGE
Paul in Philippians 3:10 prayed earnestly:

“That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;”

One wonders what prompted the apostle to pray this type of prayer! It may be, as we shall shortly see, that he discovered the secret of victory in the knowledge of the Most High God. It is beneficial to know Christ. In Daniel 11:32, the Bible reveals that the people who know their God shall be strong, and do exploits. The knowledge of God is therefore the key to doing exploits for Him. The degree of your knowledge of the Almighty God determines the level of victory you will experience over your enemies. For victorious Christian living therefore, knowledge is not a matter of choice but rather that of life and death; for lack of knowledge could lead to death (Hosea 4:6). Knowledge is generally accepted as power. Power to conquer your enemies is in knowledge. This knowledge should be the knowledge of the Most High. Let’s take a look at examples of some heroes of faith and see how their knowledge of God gave them victory.

Joseph is a hero of faith who knew God, and this knowledge helped him to abstain from sexual immorality. When his master’s wife asked him to sleep with her, he in Genesis 39:9c said:

“….how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?”

Joseph knew that the act of sleeping with his master’s wife was directly a sin against God because He knew the God of his fathers to be a Holy God. Another example is Daniel. Daniel knew his God to the level of obeying Him rather than observing the malicious decree King Darius signed up to in ignorance. Daniel knew that with his God, all things are possible. He went ahead and prayed to the God that can kill and can make alive. Jesus said we should not fear those who can only kill the body; rather we should fear the One who can kill both the body and send the soul to hell (Matthew 10:28). The three Hebrew young men were boastful of their God as being able to deliver them (Daniel 3:16-18). They also knew that it could please Him to recall them to Himself in heaven through the fiery furnace. When you know God to be a consuming fire, you will not want to do anything that will offend Him. In return, your life of consecration and holiness will shield you against the onslaught of the enemy. Seek to know the Trinity today.

PRAYER POINT

Father, reveal yourself to me. Let me know you as I ought to, and let the knowledge of you give me victory all the days of my life.

Psalm 91:1-2

1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

2 I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.

MESSAGE
The first thing that strikes you in Psalm 91:1 is that there is someone called “The Most High”. He is called “The Most High” because He is higher than the highest (Ecclesiastes 5:8b). The Name of that Person called “The Most High” is Jesus. It is written concerning Him in Philippians 2:9 that:

“Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:”

There is a story about four boys who were discussing their fathers. Each boasted about his own. The first said his father was the greatest because his father was the Head of State. The second boy said his father was greater because his father was the physician of the Head of State. His father could order the president to stay in bed for one week and the president would obey him. The third boy then said his father was higher than the fathers of the other two because his father was the medicine man of their fathers. He could kill the two fathers if he wished. The fourth boy, who was the son of a messenger, said his father was the greatest of all four fathers because, not only could his father kill all their fathers, he could also raise the dead. They were amazed, but he told them he was not talking about his physical father but the One above, whose name is Jesus.

In our reading today, we can see factors that guarantee us victory over our enemies. One factor is that “The Most High” has a secret place where He hides his own in the time of trouble. The secret place of the Most High is not a building. It is a Name, His Name. Proverbs 18:10 says:

“The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.”

The Name of Jesus is our secret place of safety because the Father has ordained that at the Name of Jesus, every knee should bow (Philippians 2:10). We also discover from today’s Bible reading that there is someone who is called “The Almighty”. He is so called because He is very strong; He can even do the impossible (Luke 1:37). The reason He can do the impossible is because power, real power, belongs to Him (Psalm 62:11). The question then is, “how do I get under the shadow of this Almighty God?” It is simple; all you need to do is to make sure you are born-again. In other words, you must be born of God through the appropriation of the work of atonement by Jesus Christ when you confess and renounce your sinful ways. The Bible says that only those who are born of God and live by faith in Him are victors (1 John 5:4-5). Victory is yours in Jesus’ Name.

PRAYER POINT
Father, keep me from evil and let your mighty hand uphold me that I may not fall away from your grace and mercy.

7 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.

8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.

9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

MESSAGE
It is very important that we identify our internal enemies. As a matter of fact, the internal enemies are more potent and dangerous than the external enemies. Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, identified his internal enemy and he cried in Romans 7:24 saying: “who shall deliver me from this body of death?” He located his adversary accurately. If you have not located your own internal enemy, you need to pray. Paul discovered his internal adversary and said: “when I want to do good, evil is present with me.” He knew his flesh was his adversary. Moses had discovered in Egypt that he had problems with his temper. When he saw two people fighting, one an Egyptian and the other a Jew, he decided to intervene, but because of his explosive anger, he killed the Egyptian. His original plan was not to kill but to defend his fellow brother, however he went too far. The moment the Adversary discovers your weakness, he will keep on hitting you at that particular spot. For example, the enemy will keep on sending amorous ladies or playboys to you if he discovers your weakness to be sexual immorality.

In Numbers 11:10-15, we discover that because the devil knew anger was the prime problem of Moses, he kept on irritating him using the children of Israel, until Moses called on God to kill him. All the things that Moses said in that passage were enough to end his career there and then if God had not been gracious. If you will carefully examine your life, you will notice straight away what your weakness is; this is your internal enemy. You need to locate it. In the case of James and John, their internal enemy was a fiery temper. That is why Jesus called them “The sons of thunder” in Mark 3:17. They proved it in Luke 9:51-56. The Lord on His way to Jerusalem sent some people to get Him accommodation in a village of the Samaritans. The Samaritans said, ‘What do we have to do with you? You do not associate with us, so you cannot stay in our village.’ When they brought the report back, James and John turned to the Lord and said, ‘let us roast them like Elijah did.’ The Lord replied, ‘No, I have not come to destroy people, I have come to save them.’ Love of women was the internal enemy of Samson. This enemy was more powerful than the whole hosts of the Philistines. What the Philistines could not do to Samson, the love of women did! My prayer for you is that the Lord will help you to locate your internal enemy and He will give you the grace to deal with it in Jesus’ Name.

Luke 18:1-3

1 And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;

2 Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man:

3 And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary.

MESSAGE
In the School of Disciples of the ministry I oversee, one of the three principal Modules is: Know Your Enemy. It is very necessary that you identify who your enemies are. There is an adage in my native language which says: “When God has revealed your enemies to you; they can no longer kill you.” The assumption is that once you can identify who your enemies are, you would be able to relate with them with caution so that they may not harm you. There is an interesting story in 1 Kings 2. David listed all his enemies and by extension Solomon’s enemies and counselled Solomon to do to them as a man does to his enemies (1 Kings 2:5-6).

Enemies are of two categories: internal and external. One is more dangerous than the other. The internal enemy is more dangerous than the external one. The reason is that if the internal enemy does not open the door to the external enemy, then you are secure. Today, we shall discuss the external enemy. For example, Goliath was an external enemy to David, and it was easy for David to kill him. You cannot afford to be gentle with the enemy because if you do not get him first, he will get you. The Almighty is very specific when He said you are “to love your neighbour as yourself,” not more than yourself. In other words, you have to make sure you are secure first before you begin to discuss the security of your neighbour. When the woman in our Bible passage today prayed to the judge: “avenge me of my adversary”, I assume that first of all, the adversary was known to her. The adversary was not a stranger. Secondly, since the adversary was known to her, it means the enemy the widow was praying about was not a new one. Thirdly, the adversary must have wronged her before. She must have had an unpleasant encounter with this adversary. The moment the adversary discovers your weakness, he will keep on hitting you at that particular spot. Fourthly, when the widow said “my adversary”, it means the adversary was personal to her. It is amazing that some people fight other people’s enemies – leaving their own unchallenged. This is foolishness. This is why we need to appreciate pastors, who by virtue of their calling, have to fight on behalf of their members. The fact that the woman cried to the judge shows that she knew she could not fight for herself; she needed a power higher than hers. This is exactly what David knew and wrote in Psalm 35. Cry to God to fight on your behalf against the enemies who want to destroy your destiny.

ACTION POINT

Prayerfully identify your enemies and ask God to deal with them on your behalf.

MESSAGE
When Isaac asked Esau his son to go and prepare a delicious meal of venison for him to eat so that he (Isaac) may bless him, Isaac’s wife Rebekah heard it and took advantage of the distance between their tents and the field where Esau the hunter would get the bush meat. She also took advantage of the short distance between her tent and the flock of her son – Jacob the shepherd boy, to quickly prepare a meal on Jacob’s behalf. This quick response to Isaac’s demand worked out for Rebekah and her son Jacob. If there is a lesson to be learnt from this intriguing story, it is that of promptness. Many of us are too slow when it comes to giving offerings to God or doing good deeds for our neighbours. At times, our so-called kind gestures are belated ones. The story was told of a rich man whose nephew went to him for financial help when his father was hospitalised. This rich man did not respond on time and by the time he made up his mind to help, the sick man had given up the ghost in the hospital for lack of medical attention. The rich man took the money to the hospital only to find out that the sick man passed on a couple of hours before.

When the woman who anointed Jesus Christ at Bethany did what she did, some people were protesting the “wastage”, but Jesus rebuked them for it and told them the significance of what she did. In Mark 14:8 He said:

“She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying.”

Now, when on the resurrection morning, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Salome came to anoint the body of Jesus Christ, they went back with the costly sweet perfume unused because it was a belated gesture; Jesus had risen! The only perfume Jesus wore to the grave was the one the woman put on Him shortly before His arrest and eventual crucifixion. During this season, you will not offer a belated offering to God in Jesus’ Name. We must always be ready to do good, according to Galatians 6:10:

“As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.”

Good deeds are needed and these deeds are time-bound, for them to be useful and appreciated. I pray that the ability and willingness to offer timely help to those who need it will be given to you this season in Jesus’ Name.

BY PASTOR E.A. ADEBOYE

MEMORIZE
A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish.
Proverbs 19:9

READ
Mark 14:57-60

57 And there arose certain, and bare false witness against him, saying,

58 We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands

59 But neither so did their witness agree together.

60 And the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, saying, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?

MESSAGE
In Exodus 20:16, God commanded that we should not bear false witness against our neighbour. The consequence of being a false witness is found in Proverbs 19:9. Wicked people cannot survive without false witnesses. They rely on false witnesses to perpetrate their evil deeds. For example, Ahab could not have gotten rid of Naboth but for the use of false witnesses (1 Kings 21:13). It was the false witness of Rehum the chancellor, Shimshai the scribe and their cohorts against the Jews that halted the rebuilding project of Zerubbabel (Ezra 4). These people wrote false allegations against the Jews and their leadership and sent the document to King Artaxerxes. The result as stated in Ezra 4:24 was devastating:

“Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.”

The effects of false witnesses are unimaginable. As a matter of fact, a false witness is a murderer in disguise. His or her motive cannot be mistaken: it is to destroy. I pray for you that false witnesses shall not destroy your destiny in Jesus’ Name.

When the Jewish leaders could find nothing to nail Jesus Christ, they opted for blackmail and false witnesses. Jesus had earlier told those who were following him in John 14:30b that:

“…for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.”

So the only way they could get at Jesus was through false witnesses. Despite the conspiracy, the Bible in Mark 14:56 says:

“For many bare false witness against him, but their witness agreed not together.”

There is a great lesson that you as a follower of Christ must learn from this story. You must live above-board like your Master if you don’t want to become an easy prey for the accuser of the brethren – Satan. In the same vein, you must learn to be transparently honest. This will prevent you from being a false witness. When you engage in false witnessing and lying, you are crucifying Jesus Christ again and the danger is that you will fall into a state where it becomes difficult to be restored (Hebrews 6:4-6). Another danger of being a false witness is that it exposes one to becoming a reprobate. This is a state where the conscience no longer checkmates a person against wrongdoing (2 Timothy 3:8, Romans 1:28-32). In what areas of your life are you a false witness? Fake affidavit? False claims that you are married with so many children whereas you have a family of just three? I pray for you that a lying tongue will not blot your name from the book of life in Jesus’ Name.

PRAYER POINT

Father, deliver me from a lying tongue and help me to be a true witness of the Cross of Jesus.

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
Psalm 1:1

READ
Mark 14:53-54

3 And they led Jesus away to the high priest: and with him were assembled all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes.

4 And Peter followed him afar off, even into the palace of the high priest: and he sat with the servants, and warmed himself at the fire.

MESSAGE
When the Bible enjoins us in 1 Thessalonians 5:22 to abstain from all appearance of evil and we keep to this biblical injunction, we are spared the calamity that would have befallen us if we did otherwise. We may not know the great dangers our adherence to this instruction has saved us from until we see the suffering of someone who did not pay attention to it. The Bible in many instances warns us against keeping company with the ungodly so that we are not entangled in their wickedness (1 Corinthians 15:33). The story was told of a sparrow which kept company with destructive ravens on a rice farm. When the owner of the farm caught the ravens in his net, the sparrow was also caught. In his plea, the sparrow told the farmer that he was not among the birds that destroyed the farmer’s rice farm and that he was not a raven. The farmer replied the sparrow: “Too bad that you are not a raven, but you shall be judged according to the company you keep.”

Peter in the Bible reading of today did three deadly things that fostered his denial of Jesus Christ. First, the Bible says he was following Jesus from afar off. Probably he might have received courage from the Master if he had followed Jesus closely. Secondly, he went as far as following Jesus to the palace of the high priest. Following Jesus from afar was bad enough but following him to the palace of the high priest was just too bad. It could have paid off if he had backed out with the other disciples; after all, Jesus had told the soldiers to allow his disciples go while he volunteered His arrest (John 18:8-9). From this event, we can see the reason why Jesus told the Laodicean Church to be either cold or hot (Revelation 3:14-16). The third thing Peter did was that on getting to the palace of the high priest, he sat with the servants and warmed himself at the fire (Mark 14:66-67)! One would wonder what Peter was still doing in that place after he had been confronted not once but twice about the fact that he had been with Jesus. The answer is not far-fetched; he was enjoying the warmth of the fire in that environment. Beloved, let us beware of comfort zones in life; they may be physically comfortable but not spiritually ideal. When a Christian lady is squatting among four male counterparts because of accommodation problems; she is playing with fire and it will soon burn her. Likewise when a young man is putting up with three to four female counterparts because of accommodation problems, he will soon be affected by the fire of lust. Let us be careful.

ACTION POINT

Study your environment and see whether or not it is conducive for your spiritual wellbeing and take wise steps to avoid the warmth of temptation.

MESSAGE
It is always good to pay close attention to instructions given by someone you claim to be your guide or guardian. Often, we miss many opportunities, breakthroughs and victories because we fail to see the details of the instructions given to us on a subject. A multi-national company once held a promotional exam for their middle-cadre staff. The questions were simple, but the exam was meant to test their ability to follow instructions. There were ten items on the question paper with a long paragraph of instructions. The time allocated for the examination was only ten minutes, but reading the instructions through properly would take about five minutes. For this reason, many did not take time to read the instructions but went ahead to answer all the questions, which appeared very simple. However, the candidates were required to answer just one question, and the instruction to this effect was hidden in the last line of the instructions they failed to read. Whoever answered more than one question failed the test. Only one person read through to the end of the instructions. The instruction, indeed, was the examination!

The apostles of old also had issues with paying attention to detailed instructions and we must learn from them. When our Lord came face to face with the reality of suffering and the Cross, He admitted that it was not going to be easy (Mark 14:34). There was only one way to pass the examination of the moment – prayer. He went to pray and told the disciples to do the same; though not for Him, but for themselves (Mark 14:38). They were however busy sleeping! Beloved, to make it to the end of our Christian race, let us pay close attention to the details of the Lord’s instructions and we shall be happy we did. When the Lord in Malachi 3:10a said:

“Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse”

He meant all tithes. You do not need an advanced dictionary to understand what “all” means. When also the Bible in 1 Corinthians 11:10 says:

“For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels.”

Apostle Paul did not say much on why a woman should veil her head while praying or prophesying. However, a conscientious child of God would not press for too many details before she jumps at this simple instruction of covering within the spiritual environment. I pray for you that the grace to pay very close attention to detailed instructions will be given to you in Jesus’ Name.

PRAYER POINT

Father, though I may not fully understand why I should, give me the grace to be completely obedient to your instructions.

MEMORISE
Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
John 6:54

READ
Mark 14:22-24

22 And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body.

23 And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it.

24 And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.

MESSAGE
At the last supper of our Lord Jesus Christ during His first advent, He offered his body to His disciples, and by extension, to us his present day disciples. An invitation to a Holy Communion service is an invitation to come and partake in the life of the Life-Giver. The body of Jesus was broken for us. When we partake in the Lord’s Supper, we are eating the body of Jesus which is meat indeed (John 6:48-50). Whoever eats His body has eternal life. The kind of life referred to here is the excellent life. Partaking in the Holy Communion introduces the dimension of excellence into your life. When you eat of the Lord’s body, the meal eats up or consumes whatever will harm you in the body. In other words, the life-giving meal has curative and preventive powers. To appreciate the value of the Lord’s Supper, let us take a closer look at its significance. The significance of the Lord’s Supper resides in its value. The Lord’s Supper marks the end of an era and the beginning of another. The Lord’s Supper is designed to give you a new life. The value of a meal is determined by how much you put into it. To give us the Lord’s Supper, the Lord had to pay a great price, shedding His blood on the cross. The Lord cannot pay such a great price only for us to remain in death. After a great price has been paid for this great meal, we must reap the benefits of life in it to the fullest.

In this season, as we celebrate the demonstration of the greatest love of all through our Lord Jesus Christ, we must appropriate the benefits of the broken body of our Lord. The body of Christ that we partake of during communion service provides abundant life. This meal positively affects our spirit, soul and body. When you partake in the life-giving meal as provided for by the broken flesh of Jesus Christ, value is added to your life. That life that seems to be empty becomes full of virtues, values and perfection. When next you partake in the Holy Communion, be full of great expectation that death is no longer your portion. This is because death has been swallowed up in victory by the resurrection power of our Lord and Saviour – Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:54). As we commemorate the Lord’s passion, death and resurrection, we must not lose sight of the significance of this great feat accomplished by Jesus Christ our Lord. One way of appreciating this is by accepting Him as your Lord and Saviour and living by the precepts of the One who paid the supreme price. He said if we love Him, we would keep His commandment (John 14:15).

PRAYER POINT

Father, I lay hold of the benefits paid for by the broken body and the shed blood of Jesus Christ that are not yet manifest in my life in Jesus’ Name.

The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born.
Mark 14:21

READ
Mark 14:17-21

17 And in the evening he cometh with the twelve.

18 And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you which eateth with me shall betray me.

19 And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, Is it I? and another said, Is it I?

20 And he answered and said unto them, It is one of the twelve, that dippeth with me in the dish.

21 The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born.

MESSAGE
Life comprises of positive and negative elements. As a matter of necessity, it is not good for someone to opt for negative living. The fact that Jesus Christ was destined to die for the sin of the whole world does not exonerate Judas Iscariot from the evil that led him to the idea of betraying the King of Glory. The question is: “why should it be him?” Judas Iscariot’s negative disposition to life pushed him to the deadly idea which turned out to be a suicide mission. The Bible says he was a thief; always stealing from the treasury (John 12:4-6). The Bible therefore enjoins us to mortify our members which push us to do abominable things in the sight of God (Colossians 3:5). Sins such as covetousness and greed that we can easily entangle ourselves with must be avoided. Examples of people who led negative lives abound in the Bible. One that readily comes to mind is Cain who murdered his brother as a result of envy. The sacrifice of his brother Abel was accepted whereas his was rejected. Instead of finding out why God rejected his sacrifice, he jealously killed his innocent and godly brother, and he never knew peace afterwards (Genesis 4:3-10). Reuben, the first son of Jacob, also led a negative life of adultery, to the point of sleeping with his father’s wife (Genesis 35:22). His father cursed him, to the effect that he would not excel (Genesis 49:3-4). This is why Paul in 2 Timothy 2:20-21 said:

“But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.”

In the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, it is better for a man to have never been born, than to be born and go to Hell. Jesus Christ warned Judas Iscariot against the love of money, but to no avail, hence, what He got from the King of kings and the Lord of lords was “woe”. What a worthless and negative life to live! All the years he spent following the Master was bungled for 30 pieces of silver! It is disheartening that some children of God are also betraying their faith in the Son of the living God for contracts, employment, promotion, political office and other sundry things. The question is: are all these worth living or dying for? Before you crucify Judas Iscariot, look inward and see whether or not you are wearing the same shoes with him. If you are, you must repent and begin to live positively as children of the Most High from today.

PRAYER POINT
Father, whatever will negate your positive plan for my life, please restrain me from it.

9 Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.

MESSAGE
Jesus Christ was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper. As He sat down to eat, a woman came with a costly perfumed ointment and poured it on his head. Some hypocrites saw it as a waste of resources because they felt the ointment could have been sold for a great deal of money which could have been given to the poor. Jesus saw their ulterior motives and in Mark 14:6-7 said:

“…..Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me. For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always.”

It is amazing to see people think that whatever someone does for his or her Maker is a waste, as we see in this story. To the surprise of those who were present at that place, Jesus said the woman shall forever be remembered for that singular act of anointing His body in preparation for His burial! There are lots of lessons to be learnt from this story; one of such lessons is that the body of our aged parents should be prepared for ‘burial’ a long time before they die. How? By taking good care of them while they are alive. When they die and we buy golden caskets to bury them or we buy 1,000 cows to entertain guests at their burial, it is a mere exercise in futility. The dead do not appreciate golden caskets, neither do they eat delicacies from fatted cows. If we live by this principle, the law of harvest will come to play down the line.

“And when he looked on him, he was afraid, and said, what is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God.”
Acts 10:4

Another lesson we learn from this story is that whatever we do for God is not only appreciated now, it is also kept in divine memory! Can you imagine that what a woman did over 2,000 years ago is still being talked about in the 21st century? Jesus said that the woman’s good deed shall be spoken of wherever the gospel shall be preached. In addition, we must learn not to listen to what people say whenever we are moved, particularly by the Holy Spirit, to do something for God (Galatians 1:15-16). The story was told of one of my sons, who on receiving a divine call into the ministry, was advised by some people that he was too young to waste away his youthful vigour preaching the gospel; “such a task is meant for drop-outs”, they said to him. The young man shunned this deadly counsel and went ahead to resign his secular appointment with the government. Today, he is fulfilled, joyfully doing what God has called him to do.

MESSAGE
Yesterday we learnt it is not right for us to get angry with God or to take offence against Him, even if we experience the deferment of our hopes. The example of John the Baptist who earlier acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, but later doubted Him because of his painful experience of incarceration is a warning signpost to us that if care is not taken, following the asking of questions, offence towards God might begin to reside in our heart. Going forward, we need to ask ourselves the question: why do we take offence, get angry or feel irritated by the way God deals with us? We shall look at three answers to this question.

In the first instance, we children of God sometimes tend to overestimate ourselves as human beings (James 4:13-14). Some people of God in olden times realised this, hence Job 25:6 calls man a worm. Whereas God is infinite, man is finite. He is the potter and we are the clay; how true!

Also, we tend to underestimate the sacrifice God has made for us. Though we are but dust and worms, God did give His Son for our redemption – essentially God Himself, the maker of the universe, coming to be conceived in a human womb and be born as human. Not only that, He subjected Himself to the limitations of man and was maltreated by His own creatures; all just for you and me not to perish in hellfire but to be with God forever. Having done all these, He has proved beyond any reasonable doubt He has our best interest at heart, notwithstanding our present situation (John 3:16, John 15:13, 1 Timothy 3:16).

Lastly, it is because we tend to forget that His thoughts are not our thoughts and His ways are not our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9). Whatever He is doing, He has our end in view. He is concerned about how we end; after all what shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world but loses his soul? While looking for a site for our Camp ground, initially it was the old Youth Camp at Ogunmakin (South-West, Nigeria) that we were negotiating for. But in spite of prayers and crying to God to take ownership of it, we had no money to pay. It eventually went to another ministry that was able to pay the required amount. We all wept because of this experience, but God knew what He had in store for us – the Redemption Camp, which is much bigger and in a much better location.

ACTION POINT
Praise and thank God for the sacrifice of Jesus for you. Right now resign your will to Him over the current issues of your life.

2 Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,

3 And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?

4 Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see:

5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.

6 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR : JEREMIAH 13 – 15 ; PSLAM 47.

When deferred hope prompts a person to issue queries to God, it is an indication of the person taking offence towards God. We have to settle it in our hearts as children of God that there can never be justifiable grounds for us to pick a fight with God. You can ask God questions to seek clarification of issues, but to query Him, that is a no-go area. The case of John the Baptist in our Bible reading is one glaring example of this practice which some of us also indulge in. John had himself acknowledged Jesus to be the Lamb of God that takes away our sins in John 1 : 29. But much later, in the midst of his trouble with King Herod, who imprisoned him because he spoke out against Herod’s taking of his brother’s wife, he sent his disciples to Jesus. This time, it was not to complement Jesus, but to air his doubt about who he had rightly proclaimed Him to be. Why did it come to this? It was because he expected that Jesus as the Messiah ought to have known about his situation and to have either spoken or applied His power in getting him out of Herod’s custody. To be imprisoned is not a palatable experience, yet our knowledge and confidence in God’s ability, love, faithfulness and goodness should not be challenged by our life experiences. Jesus replied John’s emissaries in Matthew 11: 6 thus:

“And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.”

We must be careful in the midst of challenges never to allow offence against God set in our heart.

There is no one who has been saved for ten years, who would not ask questions about not seeing corresponding results or answers to some prayers. However, you must realise that life is in phases ( Psalm 37 : 25 ). Take for example Joseph: first, he was his father’s favourite with a special coat ( Genesis 37: 3 ), next he was the dreamer ( Genesis 37 : 19 ), then he was an interpreter of dreams ( Genesis 40 : 1 – 22 ) and finally he became the Prime Minister (Genesis 41 : 39 – 46 ). The journey of life for Joseph was not all smooth sailing, but his end was glorious. Joseph did not begin to issue queries against God in the evil days of his life experiences. Life is in phases. In the eyes of men, some phases are bad while some are good. As a child of God you must however remember that :

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
Romans 8 : 28.

ACTION POINT :

Have a deep reflection to recollect wherever you may have taken offence or have been angry with God, and apologise to Him from your heart.

Mark 4:35-41

35 And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side.

36 And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships.

37 And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.

38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?

39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

40 And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?

41 And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?

MESSAGE
No doubt, life in a sense is like the sea. A characteristic of the sea is that storms of varying degrees arise, putting the lives of those sailing on it in jeopardy of being drowned. In Jesus’ Name, the storms of life will not be able to drown you, your family and your business. While literal storms are natural phenomena, the storms of life are often generated and directed to an individual by enemies. Whether it is by enemies in the flesh or in the spirit realm, every situation that would constitute a storm in your life shall be disappointed in Jesus’ Name.

Jesus was in the boat with His disciples on a mission across the Sea of Galilee. His Father’s business that should bring deliverance to the mad man in Gadara, who the devil had been afflicting with chronic insanity, beaconed. The devil had an idea of this and decided to thwart it, but he is never a match for our God, and He will never be. This is why I command whatever storm you may be experiencing now to be calm in Jesus’ Name. As you sail on the sea of life to fulfil your destiny, the devil and his allies are not happy because your success is also going to result in the blessing and deliverance of others. This is because you will use it for God’s service, to build up the work of God and to bring souls to the Kingdom of God. Nevertheless, the devil and his agents will fail.

At the onset of the storm, while Jesus was taking time off to relax, the disciples embarked on a rescue operation of the boat. The situation however did not get better. They could not cope. It was then they remembered to wake Jesus up.

1 Samuel 2:9c says:
“……..for by strength shall no man prevail.”

You should not make this mistake; your role is to notify Jesus of the storm. In any case, Jesus woke up unperturbed. The Author and Controller of Peace himself rebuked the winds behind the storm, and there was calm. You shall begin to experience calmness in your marriage, in your finances, in your education, in your business and in your health from now on in Jesus’ Name. Stop running helter-skelter to dubious men all over the place; they will only compound your problems. Look up to Jesus; let Him handle your storm.

ACTION POINT

Repent of being too quick to seek out man’s solution instead of God’s at times of difficulty. Praise God, the all-powerful One and tell Him of any storm in your life.

1 To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, the servant of the LORD, who spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul: And he said, I will love thee, O LORD, my strength.

2 The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.

3 I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

MESSAGE
The incident that led to the fall of man in the Garden of Eden was a complete loss of all that is beautiful. Prior to the fall, man wasn’t fearful of his environment or of the presence of God. But after the fall, for the first time, Adam was terrified by the presence of God which he previously used to anticipate. With this came the universal culture of complaining, murmuring and grumbling. The awesome glory of God over his life and destiny was destroyed. Glory to God that Jesus as the second Adam has come to undo the evil the devil subtly brought on man.

David in our Bible reading for today reveals the importance of eulogising God. He was confessing who God is to him: his rock, his fortress, his deliverer, his strength, his buckler, the horn of his salvation and his high tower. In his praise of God, David was also expressing his confidence and trust in God. God enjoys our praise. He says in Psalm 50:23 that he who offers praise glorifies Him. Are you a child of God? You must know that there is no place for those that murmur and grumblers in heaven; it is an eternity of ecstatic adoration of our great King (Revelation 4:5-11). David, even in those days caught the revelation of this truth; hence he resolved to banish murmuring from his life. This caused him to proclaim in Psalm 34:1 that:

“I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.”

This is the secret of the greatness of this man who was once a nobody. From a human perspective, David had no prospect of becoming anything. Usually in families, it is expected that the youngest in the family would enjoy some pampering and ease, but not so with David. His older siblings remained at home enjoying themselves with the milk from the flock of sheep that David kept in the bush all by himself. However, every labour has its rewards. David became the greatest king of Israel and became an ancestor of our Lord Jesus. Because he was full of praise, God could not help but lavish His favour on him. Mind you, a great man always likes his greatness to be acknowledged. He would like that those around him do not embarrass or disgrace him by diminishing his status in any way. I once had an uncle who would refuse financial assistance to anyone who requested a meagre amount, because he felt such a request was demeaning to him. God is greater than the greatest of all men. Whatever your condition, He has the final say. It’s not over until it is over, therefore don’t let the challenges of your life reduce your God to a grasshopper in your eyes.

ACTION POINT

No matter your current condition, right now look to God. Praise Him by calling Him beautiful names. Tell Him you will praise Him at all times and that He should help you.

READ
2 Kings 7:1-10

1 Then Elisha said, Hear ye the word of the LORD; Thus saith the LORD, To morrow about this time shall a measure of fine flour be sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, in the gate of Samaria.

2 Then a lord on whose hand the king leaned answered the man of God, and said, Behold, if the LORD would make windows in heaven, might this thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof.

3 And there were four leprous men at the entering in of the gate: and they said one to another, Why sit we here until we die?

4 If we say, We will enter into the city, then the famine is in the city, and we shall die there: and if we sit still here, we die also. Now therefore come, and let us fall unto the host of the Syrians: if they save us alive, we shall live; and if they kill us, we shall but die.

5 And they rose up in the twilight, to go unto the camp of the Syrians: and when they were come to the uttermost part of the camp of Syria, behold, there was no man there.

6 For the Lord had made the host of the Syrians to hear a noise of chariots, and a noise of horses, even the noise of a great host: and they said one to another, Lo, the king of Israel hath hired against us the kings of the Hittites, and the kings of the Egyptians, to come upon us.

7 Wherefore they arose and fled in the twilight, and left their tents, and their horses, and their asses, even the camp as it was, and fled for their life.

8 And when these lepers came to the uttermost part of the camp, they went into one tent, and did eat and drink, and carried thence silver, and gold, and raiment, and went and hid it; and came again, and entered into another tent, and carried thence also, and went and hid it.

9 Then they said one to another, We do not well: this day is a day of good tidings, and we hold our peace: if we tarry till the morning light, some mischief will come upon us: now therefore come, that we may go and tell the king’s household.

10 So they came and called unto the porter of the city: and they told them, saying, We came to the camp of the Syrians, and, behold, there was no man there, neither voice of man, but horses tied, and asses tied, and the tents as they were.

MESSAGE
A child of God has every right to expect a glorious tomorrow, even if the present situation does not in any way make such optimism look realistic. In the face of uncertainty and the total economic collapse of a country, the believer who knows his God will still rightly expect a change for the better, because he knows he serves a God who specialises in giving pleasant surprises to His children. The story of 2 Kings 6 & 7 is not fictional, though it may look incredible. The famine that resulted from the siege of Samaria by its enemies became so devastating that mothers were surviving on their own children. What a terrible thing! Have you ever thought about it: even Elisha the great man of God was in the midst of the situation as others? One thing you can be sure of is that God would have taken care of him for as long as the famine lasted; though that aspect of the story is not revealed in the Bible. In the same way, the Lord is able to take care of you in the midst of any crises, only make sure you trust in Him and obey Him in all things. Pay your tithes, win souls and live holy.

We should not cease trusting God in the place of prayer for desirable changes in the state of affairs of our country as we seek to do His will in all things. In the case of Samaria, God brought about a change within 24 hours at the peak of their national predicament of insecurity that resulted in acute want. By the mouth of His servant, God pronounced great abundance upon the land. This pronouncement brought to an end both the insecurity and the famine of the land (2 Kings 7:1&18). So will Boko Haram and its activities be brought to a sudden end in Nigeria in Jesus’ Name. On the other hand, being expectant does not imply sitting down and doing nothing; in the case of Samaria, it took the rising up of four lepers, who decided to go to the camp of the Syrians, only to discover that the Syrians had fled their camp, leaving all their supplies behind. There is always a place of action to your faith, just as the Bible in James 2:17 says:

“Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.”

Are you in need of a good job? You have got to take the right step of action. Do you want your business to be more competitive? Diligently get to know what action to take and take it.

ACTION POINT

Praise God for His mercy over Nigeria. Pray for the forgiveness of sins for Nigeria and that God will grant her political leaders the fear of God and the wisdom to run the country.

1 John 4:4-6

4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.

6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

MESSAGE
What someone is carrying on the inside of him can go a long way in affecting his destiny and that of other people around him. Some people possess demonic spirits which empowers them to wreak terrible havoc on fellow human beings from the spirit realm. These are referred to as witches. Some others are possessed by demonic spirits in order to torment them and make life miserable for those around them. Such was the mad man of Gadara (Mark 5:1-5). He was made mad by reason of the demons inhabiting him. According to our Bible reading today, children of God are carrying Jesus on the inside of them. As a child of God, what you have on the inside is infinitely greater than whatsoever a possessed person can have.

Hence 1 John 4:4b declares:
“…Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world”

That is, Jesus in us is greater than Satan and his cohorts that are in the world. On this note, there is no cause for a child of God to be afraid of witches and wizards because there is no basis for comparing even Satan their boss to Jesus.

Having Jesus dwelling inside you gives life to every part of your body. If anything has died in your body before, the presence of Jesus now brings them back to life. Glory be to the Lord! I command that infected vital organ in your body, to come alive right now in the Name of Jesus. Furthermore, with Jesus in you, your body receives divine revitalisation and invigoration which enables you to survive any situation. Also, the child of God can always be hopeful of a glorious tomorrow. The Bible says it shall be well with the righteous (Isaiah 3:10). The righteous has the hope of reigning with Christ in His kingdom all through eternity. In this regard the Scripture says:

“Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.”
1 John 3:2-3

In order not to be overcome by the enemy and miss Heaven, the believer must ensure consistent holy living and constantly enforce the victory earned from the death and resurrection of Jesus by faith. You must resist the enemy with the authority that Christ has vested in you for him to flee.

PRAYER POINT

Father, let the eyes of my understanding be enlightened to comprehend and experience the reality of Christ in me.

Luke 2:25-32

25 And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him.

26 And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ.

27 And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law,

28 Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,

29 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:

30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,

31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;

32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

MESSAGE
One of the divine attributes of God is Truth. He revealed himself as the Truth in John 14:6. He is truth personified. It is impossible to expect God to lie or to be deceitful (Titus 1:2). The Bible reading for today tells of an occasion after the birth of Jesus, where He was brought to the temple for dedication. Simeon, a devout man had been told by the Holy Spirit that he would not die until he had seen Jesus born. Just as he was promised, at the exact point in time Jesus was brought to the Temple as a babe, this man turned up. From his statements, this singular event was all that was left for his life to be fulfilled as purposed by God, and it came true exactly as he was told. Has the Lord made any promise to you at any time before? Be rest assured that He will surely bring it to fulfilment in due season no matter what may be.

Besides a personal promise specifically made to you at any definite time, the Bible is full of several promises that God has put in His word to take care of His people and their needs. As a child of God you would do yourself a world of good to avail yourself of this great privilege. Just like the Psalmist said in Psalm 23:5, the table of the Lord is full of all menus to satisfy all needs. It’s a pity that many children of God suffer needlessly when they have a Father that not only has the ability to solve any problem, but is also faithful and willing to do it for them.

Nevertheless, it requires that you release your faith when expecting God’s promises to be fulfilled in any area of your life.

“But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.”
James 1:6-8

Another thing you must be ready to do is to pray. When it comes to prayer, many children of God are lazy, preferring that some other person do the praying on their behalf. Actually, there is nothing wrong in praying for one another, but when you choose to live your Christian life entirely dependent on other people’s prayers, definitely you cannot get the best of what the faith promises and therefore cannot amount to much before God and man. Obviously, no person with the mind of Christ should be willing to settle for such a base life.

ACTION POINT

Search the Scriptures for promises of God on answer to prayer, healing, deliverance, victory over sin, victory over enemies, divine promotion and financial breakthrough.

1 John 3:5-8

5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.

6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.

7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

MESSAGE
Truly, the genuineness of God’s concern and His interest in the well being of man is established in the giving of His Son to die, thereby making provision for their redemption. According to the word of God, such individuals that therefore surrender their lives to Jesus Christ are now children of God.

“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”
John 1:12-13

If believers in Christ are children of God as the Bible clearly reveals, then it means that they possess some measure of divinity, a divine DNA. It implies further that divine abilities are at their disposal, just as the passage above indicates that these people are given power to become sons. On this note, it is therefore expected that such people would live to take full advantage of this life in accordance with the divine purpose. We should then ask ourselves this question: “Is it every child of God that is on top of their situation, and are they living life to the fullness of what Jesus has on offer in John 10:10b?” The answer to this question is NO! Why is this so? Definitely the fault is not with God, it can only be with us His children.

Some of us are not sincere; some want what God has to offer but at the same time what the sinful world offers. In the first instance, sin was the undoing of man; it then follows that if after we have received pardon from Jesus, we still think we are free to continue in sin, we are taking God for a fool.

The Bible says:  “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?”
Romans 6:1-2

It is required therefore that we live holy lives otherwise we will short-change ourselves. Living holy implies total obedience to God and His word.

ACTION POINT
Earnestly pray for consecration, ask God for grace to live above the vanities of the world, and to be obedient to Him completely.

Ecclesiastes 9:11

Ecclesiastes 9:11 I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.

MESSAGE
Do you know that even the African elders have a saying that they have seen princes become slaves and slaves become landlords? This saying of the elders is philosophically aligned with the Bible (Ecclesiastes 10:7). Many times, the fact that a person is very energetic and hardworking is not necessarily an indication that the person will be successful and great in life. If human prowess and efforts were really the automatic yardsticks to great heights, then many of those people still struggling up the ladder of achievements would already be on the mountain top of success. The Bible spells this out in Ecclesiastes 9:11:

“I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.”

Favour is that currency by which you do little and obtain great results; it is that factor by which what others are struggling and sweating to accomplish, gets done by you almost effortlessly. It is favour that causes someone to be singled out of a multitude for special and pleasant treatment. Divine favour makes you someone that others would be willing to sacrifice their convenience to make comfortable. This was what happened to me years back on my first trip to Canada for a conference. On the long queue for registration on a very cold night with the ground wet, the registration officials came to me at the back of the line, collected my particulars and went on with my registration. Not only that, I was offered a cup of tea and an old man pulled off his jacket, laid it on the wet and cold field for me to sit on. What else made this happen, if not the God of the whole universe at work, moving these people to treat this first time visitor from Nigeria like a king. Jesus of course, has made believers kings and priests to his Father (Revelation1:6).

All children of God are entitled to this favour, however, it has to be accessed by each one individually. You as a child of God should make yourself a favourite of God to enjoy His divine favour at the highest level. How? Through praise, worship, complete obedience, witnessing Jesus, holy living and being full of faith. For instance, Mary the espoused wife of Joseph did not just become favoured to be the mother of the Jesus; she was a virgin. Today, many of our young women have defiled themselves with men, even among those who say they are children of God.

PRAYER POINT
Pray that God will qualify you by Himself for divine favour through a life of praise, fear of God, faith and total obedience like Mary.

Daniel 2:20-21

20 Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his:

21 And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:

MESSAGE
The divine champion is one that is made wise by God (Daniel 2:20-21). Wisdom can be defined as having the fear of God. As a matter of fact, the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. Also, it is the correct application of knowledge. This knowledge itself must be the right and pure knowledge. In this context therefore, wisdom is the substance by which a solution is proffered to problems and unpleasant situations or experiences of men, individuals, institutions, organisations and nations. Wisdom makes way for progress and success.

Daniel as a divine champion largely gained stardom by presenting solutions to the puzzles of kings. These came by God revealing to him the meaning of mysterious dreams and the strange handwriting on the wall during the reign of one of these kings. As you become a divine champion, God would graciously reveal to you the cause of people’s problems so that you may help them out in Jesus’ Name. As a professional in your area of specialisation, the Lord will show you secrets of outstanding breakthroughs for new products, ideas and principles for alleviating people’s sufferings, hardships and sorrows in Jesus’ Name. As a leader, a judge, magistrate, king, community head, governor or president, the God that gave Solomon wisdom and deep insights will honour you with the same for right adjudication and administration in your domain in Jesus’ Name.

Remember however that the divine champion is God’s representative; hence the special abilities he has are meant to bless men and honour God. It is in this light that God backed Samuel and Elijah up (1 Samuel 3:19, 2 Kings 1:9-12). The divine champion is also one that is loved and sustained by God, as was the case with Elijah. Supernaturally, Elijah was provided with food at the Brook Cherith and was fed by God through a widow at Zarephath during a period of famine in the land (1 Kings 17:3-9). God sees to it that the divine champion’s needs are met, whatever it takes. Get occupied with God and His business, please Him like Elijah and your needs will become His needs and you can be sure that you would not have to struggle like others do to make ends meet. Even blessings you do not crave for would come around you.

PRAYER POINT

Father, make me a solution provider in my generation.

Isa 40:31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

MESSAGE
Yesterday we discovered that our Lord Jesus Christ is the number one champion and that He makes His people champions. We saw also that a divine champion is a person raised up and supported by God.

One attribute of a champion is strength. The divine champion is one who receives divine strengthening. 1 Samuel 2:9 says by strength (i.e. human ability) shall no man prevail. The required divine strength for success, achievement, getting to the top etc is supplied to the divine champion by God. Hannah, who by inspiration of the Holy Spirit proclaimed those words in prayers, had that experience. She became a champion by divine strengthening. She received strength to put an end to her barrenness, thus her shame and reproach were taken away. Every barren child of God using this devotional right now, today marks that turning point in the story of your life; the strength for conception comes into you right now in Jesus’ Name. Having delivered our first three children by caesarean section, by this same divine strengthening, my wife safely delivered our fourth child by herself contrary to the expert’s opinion. The Lord who did it for us will do it for you.

By the time divine strength came upon Elijah the divine champion, He ran on foot ahead of the king’s chariot to the city of Jezreel (1 Kings18:46). Thus, the divine champion is always physically strong in his body – no room for sickness at all. Though it was by divine ability that David tore both the lion and the bear while shepherding his father’s flock, he would not have been a sickly fellow to be in the wilderness looking after the animals. Likewise, though God was the one behind his killing of the giant Goliath with a catapult, he would no doubt have been healthy in his body to be strong enough to pull the catapult string. Jesus our Master is the number one divine champion; we can only be divine champions because He is. There is no one occasion recorded where he was having a simple headache. Therefore, we His champions have no business being sick. Rather, what Jesus was doing is what we are meant to be doing also, i.e. giving health to the sick (Acts 10:38).

PRAYER POINT

Father, make me a divine champion full of the anointing, and give me a strong sickness-free body for your service.

Jeremiah 51:23 I will also break in pieces with thee the shepherd and his flock; and with thee will I break in pieces the husbandman and his yoke of oxen; and with thee will I break in pieces captains and rulers.

MESSAGE
A champion is the victor, the one winning, the overcomer. A champion is also the representative of the people, the best the people can offer. The greatest champion in human history is no other than the Lord Jesus Christ. Hence the popular song in Nigerian Pidgin English says:

“Winner o o o, Winner! 2x
Jesus you don win o, Winner!
Patapata you go win forever, Winner!”

You may wonder: Why is Jesus the greatest champion? Jesus engaged the greatest enemy of mankind – Satan, and defeated him. This was prophesied in Genesis 3:15. The outcome of the contest is in Hebrews 2:14-15. In addition to Satan, Jesus also overcame sin (Hebrews 4:15) and the world (John 16:33). Jesus is the number one Winner, He is the all-time Winner. The battles He won, He however won for you. I have good news for you today: that battle you are facing right now is a fall-out of that old battle which Jesus already won for you. The Bible says that Jesus destroyed Satan so that you might be delivered. You are delivered right now from that evil bondage and yoke of sickness, be it physical, financial, mental or emotional in Jesus’ Name. Furthermore, Jesus defeated the archenemy for you, in order to make you a champion. You are a divine champion because you are raised up and supported by God (1 Samuel 2:8, Romans 8:31).

Irrespective of the current situation and status of the individual being made into a champion by God, by the time God finishes with him or her, he or she will become an amazement and a wonder. Our memory verse for today says that God raises the prospective divine champion out of the dust and lifts the beggarly from the dunghill to make him keep company with princes. This means that the beggar becomes like a prince, and by every standard, his level changes. He no longer belongs in the dunghill. This is what our God is capable of doing. What low estate can be worse than dwelling in a dunghill i.e. having no prospect of becoming somebody in life, becoming dependent on picking and scavenging in the refuse dump? Your case might not be that bad, but even if it is, congratulations, your condition is about to change drastically. Only let the Lord Jesus Christ into your heart.

PRAYER POINT

Father, make me a divine champion; fill me with the Holy Ghost and fire.

Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.

Mark 11:12-14

Mark 11:12 And on the morrow, when they were come from Bethany, he was hungry:

Mark 11:13 And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find any thing thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for the time of figs was not yet.

Mark 11:14 And Jesus answered and said unto it, No man eat fruit of thee hereafter for ever. And his disciples heard it.

MESSAGE
When hungry, a person instinctively makes moves to have the hunger assuaged, which is normal. I had an experience in my early years when I had to go get firewood to sell to have money for my basic needs (food primarily). One day, I got stung by bees after climbing a standing dry tree. I however refused to come down until I felled dry wood from the tree. I endured the terrible pain because I knew that no wood to sell meant no food to eat. May you not be poor in the Name of Jesus. In the morning of a particular day, the Lord Jesus while returning from Bethany to Jerusalem was hungry; He needed food. Just at that moment, a fig tree was in sight; hope and expectation arose in Him. Food for a hungry tummy is a necessity, a basic one for that matter. However, on getting to the fig tree, it was all leaf and no fruit. This fig tree had taken so many nutrients from the ground, only to produce leaves. It failed to fulfil its basic purpose of bearing fruits.

Today, though Jesus is not physically present and traversing the land of Judah and Galilee as He was then, He is alive and still very much hungry for fruit. Howbeit, not for figs or grapes but for:
(i)            Fruits of righteousness – Philippians 1:11.
(ii)           Souls – John 15:16.

Just like the fig tree in our reading for today, it is saddening that rather than Jesus finding the desired fruits on many of His children, they are merely full of leaves. Such leaves are reminiscent of the conditions prevailing in the Laodicean Church (Revelation 3:17-18), which had money and material things to the exclusion of spiritual substance. Some of us have position, titles, fame and material things. We are living big, but the fruits that Jesus really desires are lacking. Some of us have taken so much blessing from Jesus only to consume all on ourselves. We dress in good attires, live large and have created a niche for ourselves in company of the who-is-who in high society, all with little or nothing at all in the area of influencing lives for Jesus. We need to repent, and like the Laodicean church, consider getting the true riches of Jesus Christ. The verdict of Jesus Christ on the fruitless fig tree is frightening. This should be an example to a leafy but fruitless individual (Luke 13:6-9). In Jesus’ Name, you will not be marked for cutting down. May you begin to bear fruit to the satisfaction of the Master henceforth, and the blessing of the fruitful will be your portion.

PRAYER POINT

Desire to be fruitful and pray to God for all that is needed to make you fruitful. Also, pray that every force that works against your fruitfulness should be destroyed by fire.

MEMORISE
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.
Ephesians 6 : 10.

READ
Ephesians 6 : 10 – 13.

Ephesians 6 : 10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.

Ephesians 6 : 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

Ephesians 6 : 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

Ephesians 6 : 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

MESSAGE
You don’t charge someone to be strong if there is no task to be performed or if pressure is not required, either for motion or putting up resistance against an opposing force. In the physical realm, mere movement requires strength. This explains why a sick person or a person just recovering from an ailment finds it difficult to walk. Spiritually you need to be strong. In today’s Bible reading, the Lord commands us to be strong, and He gives two reasons why we should be :

1. That ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

2. That ye may be able to withstand in the evil day.

There are evil forces that want to short – change a child of God’s life regarding the good things that God has in store for him or her. These spiritual forces are listed in Ephesians 6 : 12 as : principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world and spiritual wickedness in high places. These spiritual entities attack either directly or through their human agents namely: witches, wizards, and people with familiar spirits etc. They cause harm, sorrow and calamities, including abortion of pregnancies and barrenness. They give spirit husbands, spirit wives and abort prospective contract deals; they are responsible for a myriads of misfortunes. As you know, the Bible says that the thief’s (Satan) mission is to steal — stealing joy, peace etc; to kill —- through sickness, diseases, calamities, tragedies, business failures etc, and to destroy —- i .e the complete and ultimate devastation of a man’s destiny in Hell. In the Name of Jesus, you will not become a victim of Satan’s mission in any of these areas. What Jesus has for those that belong to Him is life in great abundance.

Some years ago, a young lady who for the second time had failed her Ordinary Level exams refused to eat for days, grieving over her failure. Within this period, a fight ensued between her and another young girl. Though this grieving lady ordinarily should have dealt decisively with her adversary, the reverse turned out to be the case. Why? Because the strength she needed was not there, having not eaten for days. Spiritually, the food for our spirit man is the word of God. One of the basic things necessary for a child of God to be strong is the word of God. It serves as spiritual food for the supply of the needed spiritual calories ( 1 Peter 2 : 2, Colossians 3 : 16 ). The word sanctifies and purifies us. We are to study it, meditate on it, memorize it and of course, obey it.

ACTION POINT
Take a definite steps to improve your level of interaction with the word – study, meditate on and memorize striking passages. Also appoint an accountability partner to help you.

MEMORISE : Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. Psalm 139 : 2.

READ : PSALM 139 : 1 – 3.

1 To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me.

2 Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.

3 Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.

As a child of God, the fact that God knows all about you should give you assurance and confidence, especially in the time of crises. While God sees and knows in detail what is going on around and inside of you, the devil does not have such ability. The Psalmist says:

“Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.” Psalm 139 : 2

God knows all that you are passing through now and He knows the history of your life. Sometimes, what you consider to be the origin of your problem is not. There was this young boy whose father had stolen the Raleigh bicycle of another man before he was born. So painful was this experience to the man who lost his bicycle that he placed a curse on the generations of the person that stole his bicycle. The man who stole the bicycle had died and his young boy had gone to school and successfully completed his national youth service program. However, the young man just discovered that anytime he ate rice, it turned out to be a serious life threatening meal for him. He was completely oblivious of the evil his father had committed and the curse that was placed on his generations, that they would die eating rice. The all-knowing God however revealed this to His servant, who counselled the young man to find the exact amount the bicycle cost and give it to the owner of the bicycle. This he did and his predicament stopped.

Another thing about this attribute of God in relation to how we comport ourselves is that we should not be deluded into thinking that we can cover up any misdeed. Remember David smartly got his evil deed with Bathsheba kept from being known to everybody. He thought he could cover up his act of adultery with Bathsheba and the subsequent murder of her husband, but he was foolish not to consider that God saw him. God sees all you are doing. Beyond that, He knows every thought you are thinking, even while the thought is still far away from you ( Psalm 139 : 2 ). He knows it. Won’t you rather fear this God and rightly comport yourself? Are you a brother, minister or pastor, indulging in fornication or adultery with your members? He sees you, and except you repent, you will pay dearly for it. Repent today, and you shall obtain mercy, and it shall be well with you.

ACTION POINT :

Pray that the all-seeing and all-knowing God will reveal to you any pending restitution you ought to make. Prayerfully go ahead and perform it.

If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.

2 Timothy 2:19-22

2 Timothy 2:19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

2 Timothy 2:20 But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour.

2 Timothy 2:21 If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.

2 Timothy 2:22 Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

MESSAGE
Vessels are simply containers. God identified His children as vessels in order to bring up one crucial fact about His dealings and workings on earth. The Bible in Psalm 115:16 says:

“The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD’S: but the earth hath he given to the children of men.”

Because God has given the earth to men, in order to carry out His works on earth, He does not get it done without involving men, particularly His own children. The reason is, those in Christ are co-workers with the Father (Romans 8:16-17, 1 Corinthians 3:9). The heavenly resources by which the work will be accomplished will need to be carried or contained in us as vessels, not only as vessels but also as pipes or conduits. The purity of these resources, virtue, power and gifts of the Holy Spirit are highly essential if results as desired by God will be obtained.

Though we are God’s children as believers, a component part of us is still flesh and blood. For this reason, we are called earthen vessels. The onus therefore is on us to make sure we keep this vessel pure, hence, the need to purify ourselves from all contaminants that could make us dirty. Our Bible reading for today reveals also that as vessels, the type of use we are put to will differ one from another. The interesting thing is that you are the one that determines the type of vessel you would be in the hand of God. What a great opportunity to become distinguished! It means I can become the most valuable vessel to God with all the honour that goes with such. Consider that for a mere slave who was sick, a centurion was ready to go all out to secure his healing. He had to plead with the Jewish leaders to appeal to Jesus to come and heal this servant. He did all this because this one servant was of immense value to him (Luke 7:1-10). Herein is the secret of what could make a difference between a child of God in whose life Mark 16:17 is a reality and another for whom it is not. Are you still meddling with sin, rationalising smoking, alcohol drinking, enjoying immoral thoughts and generally living in disobedience, and yet you wonder why you cannot pray to heal a headache? Mind you, if you do not desire to change, it means that God may consider using your life to send a message that teaches others why it is not good to live the way you live while claiming you are a child of God.

ACTION POINT

Prayerfully list out all the bad habits you know about yourself and determine to break them as you engage in serious prayers. Avoid factors that make you susceptible to them.

MESSAGE
Our God is a God of purpose. He created man for a purpose. He declared His purpose for man even before creating him in His own image. The Bible in Genesis 1:26 says,

“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.”

Therefore, know that you were born for a purpose; you are not an accident, even if your parents were no longer expecting children at the point they had you, just like it happened in my own case. It could even be that you’re a child out of wedlock. Notwithstanding all these, the fact that you came and you survived despite all the forces against you, and that you became exposed to the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, shows that God has you uppermost in His heart. You got this far because He was behind the scene working out His purpose for your life. So don’t let the devil deceive and rob you of your glorious destiny. Remember, Solomon was a product of a relationship founded on adultery and intrigue that resulted in the murder of his mother’s husband.

The true children of God were chosen from the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4-5). He chose us for different purposes. We should seek out His purpose and rest in Him while He brings it to pass. Moses, who was chosen for a great purpose by God, jumped ahead in his own self-counsel to begin the deliverance of his people. The result was a forty year wait in the wilderness. Do not jump ahead of God, stay close to His heartbeat in the place of meditation. Hear what He will have you do per time. Knowing and walking in God’s purpose for your life brings a level of confidence that makes you exude calmness in the midst of the storm. This was the case with Paul in Acts 27:23-25:

“For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve, Saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee. Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me.“

Know that there is a purpose for you, discover what that purpose is and pursue it with all your might. God will help you in Jesus’ Name.

1 Kings 18:17-19

1 Kings 18:17 And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel?

1 Kings 18:18 And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father’s house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the LORD, and thou hast followed Baalim.

1 Kings 18:19 Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel’s table.

MESSAGE
Though mountains are usually regarded as symbols of problems, obstacles and obstructions to progress, they can also be a place for great achievements. Elijah set the stage for an explosive encounter with top agents of the devil on Mount Carmel. He brought down revival and God was glorified on this mountain. A mountain can have good or positive uses. In Exodus 17:10-13, Moses demonstrated that a mountain can be a suitable place to direct battles. As you get on the mountain with God, every battle of life confronting you shall be crushed just as the Amalekites were routed and crushed before Israel while Moses was on the mountain. The mountain top is a place of loneliness, because when you really want to be intimate with God, it can only be you and God alone. The glory that accompanies being with God however makes it worth the price. With glory from the mountain top, your next contact with men in troubling situations is bound to deliver a solution. The episode described in Matthew 14:22-32 clearly reveals that Jesus Christ was able to bring respite to the disciples’ nasty experience of being tossed about by a terrible storm on the Sea of Galilee after spending some time with His father on the mountain.

The most important thing about the mountain top is that it is a place of answered prayers. Miracles happen there, as well as incredible things that would build the faith of unbelievers and bring down revival among the people of God. The unrepentant enemies of God meet their waterloo on the mountain, just like it happened in the case of Elijah (1 Kings 18:36-40). It should be realised however, that before these wonderful experiences can occur, there must be preparation in terms of separation, and a decision to serve God and Him alone is a necessity. Getting to the mountain top is by divine selection; Jesus took only three out of twelve disciples along with Him to the Mount of Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1-2). Jesus led the three of them, thus showing that God would lead anyone up there who is meek, humble, gentle and peaceful (Psalm 25:9, Isaiah 57:15). Note also that He led them; He did not carry them, meaning that such individuals must be willing to pay the price, because climbing requires effort. As you desire the mountain top experience, may the grace to pay the price be given to you in Jesus’ Name. Finally, remember that you must have clean hands and a pure heart to access the mountain top of God (Psalm 24:3-4). There is no room for fraudulent and dishonest imaginations at the mountain top.

PRAYER POINT
Pray that God will grant you the essential qualities required for mountain top experiences.

MESSAGE
Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth did not give birth to John the Baptist until they had grown old. Yet the Bible says this of Zechariah the priest of God and Elizabeth his wife in Luke 1:6:

“And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.”

In spite of their right standing with God, John was not born until the time was set in God’s timetable. This was on purpose. The one that would be the forerunner of the Messiah (Jesus) was only going to be older than Jesus by 6 months. God had reserved for His righteous servants the honour of becoming the parents of this fellow who would be the forerunner of the Lord, and who would also be the greatest of the Old Testament prophets (Matthew 11:11). The same applies in the case of Hannah, who was ridiculed and mocked for a long period of time, due to barrenness. Right about that time, God wanted to have a man for Himself who would love Him and walk in total obedience, so as to clear up the prevailing mess of spiritual lethargy and lead the people back to Him. That child must be one that would be completely devoted to God. Hannah’s desperation for a child made her willing to devote her child to God right about the time when God’s timetable was set for His plan. You may have been waiting for a long period for your own child and it seems God has forgotten you. Not so. You are being prepared for a history-making child that would be used mightily of God.

You must be ready when God says His time has come. From our Bible reading, when on God’s timetable, the Israelites were supposed to move into the Promised Land from the wilderness, they were instructed through Moses to do so. They were however not ready. They demonstrated unbelief and doubt in God’s ability and faithfulness. This made them afraid of the physical stature of the people in the land. Hence they revolted and missed their chance. When it eventually dawned on them that they had made a serious mistake, it was too late for them. All these happened within the space of a 24-hour window. Even an hour’s delay can be disastrous in the things of God. In 1 Kings 17:8-16, if Elijah had delayed, the widow would have prepared her last meal and she would have eaten it all. It is my prayer that you will be ready when God’s time comes, in Jesus’ Name.

ACTION POINT
Decisively deal with the weaknesses of unbelief, doubt, disobedience and fear before they cause you a great loss.

MEMORISE : Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; for my time is not yet full come. John 7 : 8.

READ : JOHN 11 : 39 – 44.

39 Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.
40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?

41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

God is never too early, and He is never too late. His timetable is set on purpose; the purpose is not only for your sake but also for His. In all things, His name shall be glorified. No doubt, He would have been glorified healing Lazarus of his sickness, but this cannot compare to raising him from the dead after four days. God works according to His own time-table. His time-table is not necessarily in tune with your own time-table, even when it concerns situations or issues of your life for which you desire His intervention. Being the perfect God that He is, His time-table is the perfect one and not yours. Your case will soon become a testimony that will bring you great joy and celebration; your testimony will also bring great glory to God, in Jesus’ Name. Keep resting in Jesus, keep trusting in Him, and don’t shift your focus from Him. You are on the verge of God turning the table in your favour and turning it against your enemies.

The attributes of God’s nature such as omnipotence, omnipresence and omniscience are demonstrated in the way His timetable works. His love moves Him to seek the good of His people and to desire their peace, joy, fulfilment, health etc. By His omnipresence and omniscience, He sees and knows all that is going on, even to the smallest detail. Through His omnipotence, He has the ability to effect the required and desirable change – for example, He can make a ninety year old woman conceive a child, as was the case with Sarah. He can bring back to life a decaying corpse, as was the case of Lazarus, the brother of Martha and Mary ( John 11 : 39 – 44 ). He can also make a woman to have natural birth after three previous births by caesarean section, as He did for my wife. God, by His omnipotence is even able to bring back lost opportunities, such as in the life of Abraham, who in spite of working out his own plan to fulfil God’s purpose for his life, still received the true seed of promise, though his action and expectation should have aborted God’s original plan for his life ( Genesis 17 : 16 – 19 ).

What more can we hope for? When God is at work, the impossible becomes possible, the irreversible becomes reversed, and the hopeless becomes hopeful. He can rewrite history with your life. For someone using this devotional now, your accepted time is now. Your story is changing from a shameful or reproachful one to an enviable one. You will forget quickly the pain and sorrow of your past by the change of events which will occur soon in Jesus’ Name.

ACTION POINT :

Extol God for all His attributes: love, power, faithfulness and others. Tell Him you love and will serve Him with all your heart. Then tell Him what you want Him to do for you.

MESSAGE
God in His perfection has His own ways of doing things. One of such ways is that He has a timetable by which He works, and He follows it strictly. This is demonstrated in the way He handled the case of Lazarus, the brother of Mary and Martha (John 11:1-8). The Bible says He loved this man and his two sisters. Because of this love, the sisters of Lazarus were in no panicky state at all when he fell sick because they knew that all they needed was for Jesus to hear that His friend was sick and He would rush to the scene and heal him immediately. How mistaken they were. However, God knew of the condition of Lazarus even before it happened. The Bible says:

“Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world.”
Acts 15:18

Lazarus’ sisters waited for Jesus to come till the time they concluded it was all over. They were not disappointed at the end because when it was time for Him to act according to His timetable, their mourning turned to joy and they sang a new song.

If you are truly His child, walking uprightly before Him, be aware that He knows of that experience you are having for which you earnestly desire a change. He is not just getting aware of it now but He knew about it before you were born. How amazing! When He stepped into the case of Lazarus according to His own time-table on the fourth day of his demise, the hopeless situation became a great testimony. Has His “delay” made your case worse, or has your case degenerated and decayed, just like the body of Lazarus in the grave for four days? I have good news for you: the Lord will step in and yours shall be a mighty testimony, and great joy shall follow in Jesus’ Name.

Note that while the disappointment of Martha and Mary lasted over their dead brother, it was not reported that they got angry with Jesus. In grief, they did not consider Him less than they had taken Him to be. They did not blaspheme or say rubbish against God. There is no doubt that they were pained because Jesus did not come around at their own timing when, supposedly, there was still hope. Nevertheless, their response to Jesus was still that of reverence (John 11:32).

KEY POINT

Ensure you do not get angry with God when faced with trouble. This could compound your problem.

There are people with dual citizenship in this world. Some others migrate and renounce the citizenship of where they are coming from to take up that of another land. The nature of a believer is close to this. Before becoming born-again, you were born to exist in this physical world, but when you give your life to Christ, you now exist at a higher spiritual realm of God in addition to being present in this physical world. John 1:12-13 says:

“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”

This dual contrasting existence of every child of God poses some challenges especially in a world that is hostile to the ways of our native land. The ways and manners of our native land are outlined for us in the Bible. These Bible traditions which form the pattern for our life are not going to be popular in this world but rather, demon-inspired fashions, styles and behaviours will continue to be the norm. The unfortunate thing is that some people of God have lost their identity and are occupied with the fashion of this world which will pass away. Our Lord made it very clear from our Bible reading for today that the world will not love us because we are not of the world. We are also instructed in 1 John 2:15 not to love the world or the things that are in the world.

We need to be clear about our identity. We are told that though we are in this world, we are not of the world. We therefore ought not to be bugged down by the affairs of this world but rather by that of our native land – Heaven. We are to exhibit the culture of Heaven right here in this world. Our affections ought to be on the things above (Colossians 3:1-2). Beloved, what is your affection set on? What are those things you are seeking? Remember, friendship with the world is enmity with God (James 4:4). This means if you claim to be a child of God, and yet you love the world and its ways and methods of evil doings, in reality you’re an enemy of God. Please examine your life and ways this moment; you may not have been like that from the beginning, but by not being sober and vigilant you exposed yourself to the subtlety of the wicked one. Turn to God now with godly sorrow and repentance, and he will forgive you and restore you to spiritual fervency again. Let it be known to you that the trumpet is about to sound. May you really be ready in Jesus’ Name.

ACTION POINT

In whatever area of life this message affects you, repent, cry to God for mercy and amend your ways. Pray for the revival of holiness and power in the Church.

Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.
Revelation 2:4

READ
Revelation 2:1-5

Revelation 2:1 Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks;

Revelation 2:2 I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars:

Revelation 2:3 And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name’s sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted.

Revelation 2:4 Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.

Revelation 2:5 Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.

MESSAGE
As a Christian, your heart ought to be aglow with genuine love for Christ, unless you are not genuinely saved as a result of having not truly repented from your sins even though you have confessed Jesus. At the new birth experience, the Holy Spirit regenerates our spirit and fills it with deep and pure love for God. However, often times, we do not diligently watch to ensure the flame of this love is kept aglow, rather we gradually give prime attention to some spiritual exigencies at the expense of our first love, forgetting that this first love in itself has a way of propelling and driving us into the activities required of us by God. It becomes disastrous when we get to a state where we consider as less important, the condition of our first love. God did not hesitate to point out the mistake the church at Ephesus made by falling into this state. He told them that in spite of those good things they were occupied with, He would remove their candlestick because they had forsaken their first love. Thank God they had the opportunity to repent. May you not get to a state where God will remove your light in Jesus’ Name.

Beloved, what really is this first love for God? This is that deep and pure affection; His kind of love toward us which we are born into at our surrendering to Christ. It is the kind of affection between two lovers by which they share deep intimacies just between themselves to the exclusion of all others. God cherishes His communion with His bride (the believer). The lesson here is that we should not allow our labour or service no matter how expedient to becloud our consciousness and the necessity to maintain our first love for Jesus.

What are the expressions of this love? They include: Strong desire to be in the presence of God in praising, thanking and worshipping Him, spontaneously singing to Him either in private or in public. Another is by spontaneously expressing a fondness of him, making reference to Him at all times. Also, it includes readily resorting to him when confronted with any given difficult situation and finally, enjoying imitating him all the way – such as by living holy. When we measure a life that portrays these expressions against the attitude of some who say they are His children, you will discover that there seems to be no trace of this love, or that it has been suffocated. What shall we say about a Christian who in a restaurant cannot pray over his food, or stylishly prays over the food before eating to avoid being noticed by other people?

ACTION POINT

Pray to God to help you recognise the true state of your first love for Him and ask for help to sustain it. If your love is found wanting, repent and ask for mercy to rediscover it.

Psalm 102:13 Thou shalt arise, and have mercy upon Zion: for the time to favour her, yea, the set time, is come.

MESSAGE
Many times, the prayers we importunately make to God are like when clouds are gathering together. They gather together over a period of time until thick layers of clouds are formed. Heavy torrents of rain will then begin to fall over the area where the clouds were formed. The Bible indeed says:

“If the clouds be full of rain, they empty themselves upon the earth: and if the tree fall toward the south, or toward the north, in the place where the tree falleth, there it shall be.”
Ecclesiasties 11:3

From this illustration, we observe that the result of cumulative prayers can be great at the appointed time. However from our Bible reading for today, the time to favour you – a child of God, is declared to be now! The use of the phrase: “is come”, attests to this. It therefore follows that you can fast forward your time for actualising God’s favour to the present. Such was the case of the wedding at Cana of Galilee. In the middle of the celebration, the wine ran out. What an embarrassment, what a shame. Jesus was at the occasion with his disciples and so was his mother Mary. Perhaps the celebrant was a close relation of theirs, as it is obvious that Mary was an insider. She knew what was going on before it became an issue of public knowledge and ridicule. Knowing the power of God in her son, she approached Him for assistance to remedy the situation. Jesus however told her His hour was not yet come. She nevertheless by faith went ahead to tell the servants that whatever he asks them to do they should do it (John 2:5). Before the “nakedness” of the celebrants became exposed, Jesus covered them up by performing his first ever miracle of turning water to wine, a wine of incomparable quality.

Is your case at the threshold of becoming an object of public ridicule and making you a laughing stock? The same Jesus will cover your nakedness like He did at that occasion. Like Mary, rather than grumbling and murmuring, what you need is faith in God. You should also ensure that you demonstrate your trust in Him by praising and thanking Him, living a lifestyle of obedience and holiness, and by touching and winning souls (1 John 3:22).

ACTION POINT
Praise God for having your best interest at heart and for His anticipated intervention in your situation that will lead to a harvest of great testimonies.

MESSAGE
These days, even the children of pastors are not exempted from the degeneration prevalent among youths. You are expected to train up your children on the word of God. Some pastors could say one thing in church and another thing at home, hence the children become confused, leading to their rebellion against God.

Children, if your parents are pushing you aright, glory be to God. If they are not, you can chart a course in life that goes through God’s principles. My own mother did her best on me. She pushed me; thank God I allowed her to push me. You must be hard working if you are not banking on bribing your way through life. Bribing your way through can only take you some distance. There is one thing that takes one to the top in life – hard work. God is not going to promote lazy fellows. “There is no royal road to success” they say. The elders will tell you princes have become slaves before. Parents, some of your children spend too much time watching TV and playing video games. Life is no bed of roses; there is a lot of struggle going on in the world. Only the hardworking will reach the top, so sit up and work hard. Some Christians are believing God for breakthroughs, but let me tell you the truth; there is no breakthrough for a lazy man, because God knows if the breakthrough comes by laziness, the breakthrough would slip out of his hand.

Children, be aware that you must obtain blessings from your parents. Honour your father and mother so that they may bless you. I have said it over and over again that I am where I am today by the grace of God and by the blessings my mother pronounced on me. One blessing she used to pronounce then which I did not understand was: “Son, because you have done this, you would call one person but two hundred will answer.” Today, by the grace of God, if I call one pastor and I do not mention any name, more than two hundred would respond.

Finally, one cannot be in sin and expect to be a star for God. How can one in sin rise in God; how can God promote such? The Bible says we cannot continue in sin and expect grace to abound. Parents, if you are not ready to be a star for yourself, for the sake of your children, please surrender your life completely to Jesus so that the future of your children will be secure in glory. Do this, if you truly love them.

PRAYER POINT
Pray for children of ministers of God that they would be true to the God of their parents and that they will be shining stars in this generation.

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Proverbs 22:6

READ
Psalm 127:3-5

Psalm 127:3 Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.

Psalm 127:4 As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.

Psalm 127:5 Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.

MESSAGE
One major undoing of modern civilized society is an abounding generation of untrained children. This trend did not just start, but has been on for some time now. The result is that many untrained children of few years back have become parents themselves. It is the multiplier effect of their lack of proper home training that is now being experienced in the society. Home training is a moral training by which such virtues as honesty, diligence, respect for elders and also some abilities cum skills – such as care of the body, cooking etc are inculcated into children. You will observe that the children of these days have no respect for older ones except in some few cases where parents are not too busy to give attention to the training of their children.

The Bible clearly shows that some children have cut their lives short for being rude to people who are old enough to be their parents (2 Kings 2:23-24), hence time and energy must be invested by parents into their children to forestall such. What about the area of marriage? Some ladies have everything going fine for them but have failed in the area of marriage. They are beautiful, highly educated and have good jobs, but they lack some basic housekeeping and home making skills like preparing good food. Such demeanor have pushed their husbands into the hands of other women who can do better, thus they lose marital joy and peace which often results into a total collapse of the marriage. In many cases, the wedding day was full of all pomp and pageantry, the officiating pastor would have preached from his heart a message such as: “Keys to a Happy Home”, he also would have prayed his heart out at the occasion. But all these ought to be on the foundation that should have been laid a long time earlier. Psalm 11:3 chiefly sums up such cases.

Rather than orientating their children into godliness through godly conversation at home as Deuteronomy 11:18-19 commands, some Christians only engage themselves with worldly counsels and jokes. Our memory verse says train up your child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it. God knows better than we do. He did not say wait until these children become old, but rather from their infancy we need to begin to train them up in the godly way so that their tomorrow would be bright. God says in Deuteronomy 11:19 & 21 that what you teach your children when you’re with them at home will determine how God will respond to them.

PRAYER POINT

Pray that the eyes of parents will be open to see the evil of not training their children and that God will touch the heart of our youths to live godly lives.

OPEN HEAVEN DAILY DEVOTIONAL…
DATE: FRIDAY 3RD FEBRUARY 2017
THEME: RESULT-PRODUCING PRAYER
Memorise:
In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. 1 Thessalonians 5:18
Read: Mark 11:22-26
11:22 And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.
11:23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.
11:24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
11:25 And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.
11:26 But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.
MESSAGE:
Result-producing prayers are prayers that remove mountains. They are prayers that put the forces of hell to flight. They part Red Seas and make a way for you into your promised land. These are prayers that guarantee the achievement of impossible feats and open the door to outstanding success. They are prayers that put business ideas in the heart of entrepreneurs and make their businesses remain at the cutting edge of prosperity even during an economic crunch. It is the type of prayer that stills every storm in the life of an individual. Result-producing prayers make deliverance from evil powers possible. By these prayers, a beggar is raised from the pit and made a channel of blessings to generations after him. From today, your prayers will command outstanding results in Jesus’ Name.
A lot of people pass through this world like an ant: unnoticed and unknown. Their minds are so beclouded by the powers of darkness that they do not understand the will of God for their lives. There are several people at various crossroads in life who have no clue of what to do next. For some, their hopes are dashed and purpose lost. It is only in the place of prayer – result-producing prayer – that you can put a stop to such activities of the devil. Prayer is a wonderful privilege the saints of God can use to access the promises of God. When you engage in violent prayer, it releases your faith. Faith in turn enables you to call those things that be not as though they exist. It sees life in death, prosperity in poverty, salvation in the enslavement of sin, fruitfulness in barrenness, redemption in destruction and miracles in the face of insurmountable problems.
The problem I have seen in the Body of Christ is that ministers theorise prayer. Prayer is a potent weapon that can produce speedy results. It should be consciously engaged in settling any unrest, challenges, confrontations, intimidations and difficulties that one faces in the journey of life. Prayer is not theoretical, but a practical demonstration of God’s power. I have been to prayer meetings where ministers preach so much about prayer but end up not leading people in prayers. I have also seen people, who were asked to lead prayers, get distracted by other issues after getting to the pulpit. The power of the cross of Calvary will destroy every yoke, bondage, spell, attack and curse that has been waging war against your prayer life in Jesus’ Name.
Key Point:
It is dangerous for a minister of the gospel to preach more than he prays.

THEME: FIRST DEAL WITH SIN
Memorise:
When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee. Mark 2:5
Read: Mark 2:1-12
2:1 And again he entered into Capernaum after some days; and it was noised that he was in the house.
2:2 And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them.
2:3 And they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four.
2:4 And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay.
2:5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.
2:6 But there was certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts,
2:7 Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?
2:8 And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts?
2:9 Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk?
2:10 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,)
2:11 I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house.
2:12 And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion.
MESSAGE:
In Romans 6:23, the Bible establishes that there is a relationship between sin and death. From observation, we know that sickness is an agent of death. For the discerning mind, it follows that there is also a relationship between sin and sickness. In 1 Kings 17:17-18, when the son of the widow of Zarephath died, she cried out to God’s servant saying,

“What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son?” 1 Kings 17:18b
What was she really saying? She had the understanding that death could come as a result of sin, and that sickness is agent or forerunner of death. If you want to enjoy the long life that God has promised His children, you must therefore keep a safe distance from sin. If you are still living in sin after confessing Christ as your Lord and Saviour, and at same time you expect God to keep death far away from you, you must be joking. Every act of sin you willfully engage in exposes you to the agents of death. You shall not destroy yourself before your God-ordained appointment with death in Jesus’ Name!
Similarly, In Mark 2:1-12, when a man who was paralysed from neck down was brought to Jesus, as bad as his condition was, the Lord simply ignored what every other person cared about and forgave him his sins first. Nobody thought this was relevant. The Lord did this because He could see that this man’s spiritual condition was far worse than his physical state of health. For this reason, I often marvel when some ministers focus on healing the sick before preaching salvation to them. Several prayers for the sick are unanswered because of the presence of sin in their lives. It is wisdom to deal with the sin in the life of the sinner before asking God to heal the fellow. If the sick sinner is healed before being asked to surrender to Jesus, he may refuse to surrender at all after receiving the healing. He may think his healing is by chance and not from your prayer, and if returns to his sin, the sickness may come back. If he then dies in his sin, his soul will go to hell. But if the fellow is first made to receive Jesus Christ before being healed, there is a greater chance of him following the Lord. Even if the healing is not manifested, if he dies, his soul is saved from eternal hell. Always deal with sin first!
Key Point:
When confronted with the problems of sin and sickness, it is wisdom to deal first with sin because it could be the root cause of the sickness.

11:26 He that withholdeth corn, the people shall curse him: but blessing shall be upon the head of him that selleth it. Proverbs
MESSAGE:
For all those who have received the gift of righteousness through the finished work of Calvary, the design of God for our lives is that we live by His favour. The psalmist spoke prophetically about this in Psalm 5:12:

“For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.”
The reality of this was manifested in the life of our Lord Jesus Christ (Luke 2:52), and the early church also experienced the same (Acts 2:47). However, there are some keys that unlock the door to experiencing God’s favour. One of these keys is found in today’s Bible reading, which says:

“The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself” Proverbs 11:25
Before you can access the fatness and abundance you desire from heaven, you must first learn to give to the Lord what you treasure: your best and your all. This is what brings about the difference in results experienced by a person living by God’s favour and a person living by labour; one is definitely easier to achieve than the other. Towards the end of a particular year, one of my sons preached on the difference between labour and favour. He cited two examples: Jacob and Isaac. According to him, when Jacob wanted a wife he laboured for 14years before he could get his heartthrob, but when Isaac wanted to marry, he just went on a stroll. One laboured but the other was favoured. I have decided to enjoy divine favour. I am tired of labouring. I want to continually live in the realm of divine favour, and to do so, I will sow as I have never done before, because favour responds to the law of harvest.
Are you not tired of increase dependent on labour? Why exert everything you have for several years to get a particular blessing, when you can pay a little price through sowing and still get great results in a shorter time, without much stress? One effective way of redeeming the time, as admonished in Ephesians 5:16, is to dump less effective methods for better, faster and less stressful ways of doing things. You are not redeeming the time when increase only through labour. This implies that so many things will have to wait until you have the strength to work for them. Why go by labour when you can rise on the wings of divine favour? Choose the vehicle to your place of destiny today!
Action Point:
The price you pay to ride a flight by favour, through sowing seeds, is far cheaper than what you have to pay through labour.

MESSAGE:
How you start a year is very important, because it can dictate the tone for the year. But more importantly, how the year ends will be determined by the goals you set and your pursuit of them. Some people start a year with little or nothing but end it in a great way; whereas some other people who start the year with quite a lot have little or nothing to show by the end of it. Why is this so? To get the most out of the year, you need to understand the actors and factors at play in determining the course of the year. One of such actors is God.
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33
At the onset of every year, most people go about seeking material things. They set material goals and device strategies to accomplish them. Thereafter, they begin a race down the line and shun anything that might affect the realisation of their goals, dreams and aspirations. Yet, at the end of the year, many are still miles apart from the attainment of those goals. Even when they attain their goals, such people are often still left with great vacuum in their soul that nothing else can fill. This is simply the result of God being left out of the picture in their pursuit of material things.
By its very nature, wealth can be very elusive. Before dissipating so much energy in pursuing wealth like most people will do this year, please consider what the patriarchs of old said about it. King David said that it’s possible to heap up wealth for users and spenders you do not know (Psalm 39:6). The patriarchs also said it’s very dangerous to put your trust in the riches you have amassed because you can be disappointed by them when you least expect it (Psalm 62:10, Proverbs 11:28). The preacher in Proverbs 23:5 further adds that riches can suddenly develop wings and take flight from where you think you have kept them securely. Where do they fly to? They fly towards Heaven, back to God their original owner. For these reasons, you must put God at the center of all your pursuits this year so that they can be meaningful. If you choose to seek and pursue after God, you will get the material things of this world with little effort. This year, be wise! Don’t waste your time and effort pursuing things that should be pursuing you.
Prayer Point:
When you run after material things at the expense of a thriving relationship with God, you tell Him to His face that He is not important in your life.

HYMN 7: O JESUS, I HAVE PROMISED.
1. O Jesus, I have promised,

To serve Thee to the end;

Be Thou forever near me,

My Master and my Friend;

I shall not fear the battle

If Thou art by my side,

Nor wander from the pathway

If Thou wilt be my Guide.
2. Oh, let me hear Thee speaking,

In accents clear and still,

I dare not trust my judgment:

Thy way shall be my will;

Oh, speak to reassure me,

To hasten or control;

Oh, speak, and make me listen,

Thou Guardian of my soul.
3. O Jesus, Thou hast promised

To all who follow Thee

That where Thou art in glory

There shall Thy servant be;

And Jesus, I have promised

To serve Thee to the end;

Oh, give me grace to follow,

My Master and my Friend.
4. Oh, let me see Thy footmarks,

And in them plant mine own;

My hope to follow duly

Is in Thy strength alone.

Oh, guide me, call me, draw me,

Uphold me to the end;

And then in Heav’n receive me,

My Savior and my Friend.

Memorise:
Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee. Isaiah 60:1
Read: Isaiah 60:1-5 (KJV)
1 Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.

2 For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.
3 And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.
4 Lift up thine eyes round about, and see: all they gather themselves together, they come to thee: thy sons shall come from far, and thy daughters shall be nursed at thy side.
5 Then thou shalt see, and flow together, and thine heart shall fear, and be enlarged; because the abundance of the sea shall be converted unto thee, the forces of the Gentiles shall come unto thee.
MESSAGE:
Sometimes, we as children of God become so familiar with a passage of Scripture that we lose the essence of the truths embedded in it by the Holy Spirit. One such passage is Isaiah 60:1:
“Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee.”
The first truth of Holy Spirit is the relaying to our spirit through this passage today is that this statement is an express command. Here, the Almighty God is commanding us to arise! It is someone who is either sitting or laying down that would be commanded to arise. So, when God says “Arise”, it presupposes that you are either sitting down idle, or that you are on a bed enjoying the sleep of death. I command this day that whosoever is wasting away his or her time in idleness or in the sleep of sin and death will arise in the Name of Jesus Christ! In addition, we are not commanded to arise into obscurity; rather, we are commanded to arise and shine. I also decree that all who are reading this devotional today will arise from their state of obscurity and mediocrity and come to the limelight of success in Jesus’ Name. Arise and shine:
Another truth worthy of note in this same verse of Scripture is this: God is announcing that your light has come. Before now, the Lord did not command you to arise and shine because there was nothing to aid your shinning; but now, He is declaring that your light has come. I therefore say prophetically to you today that your light has come in Jesus’ Name. Here is the big revelation we must not allow to slip away from us: the Holy Spirit in Isaiah 60:1 declares “Thy light is come.” You may be wondering, “What is the light?” the question however should not be what, but Who is the light? John 8:12 reveals the answer:
“Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”
Jesus Christ is the light of the world. Isaiah’s prophetic writing in Isaiah 60:1 came to pass the day Jesus Christ came into this world.

Indeed there is darkness in this world; majority of us are witnesses of this fact. The darkness we are talking about is not the absence of physical light. We are talking about spirit darkness, principalities and powers (Ephesians 6:12). Here are some pertinent questions for you to answer: Are you still in darkness? Why has your light not come? It may be because you have not embraced the Light. If that is the case, today is your day. Accept Jesus, the Light, into your life today and darkness will no longer comprehend you, and therefore will be unable to stop you (John 1:5).
Prayer Point:

Father, let the light of your Son, Jesus, shine upon me today, and let His glory help me.

HYMN 4 : THROUGH THE LOVE OF GOD OUR SAVIOUR
1 Through the love of God our Saviour,

all will be well.

Free and changeless is his favour,

all, all is well.

Precious is the blood that healed us,

perfect is the grace that sealed us,

strong the hand stretched forth to shield us,

all must be well.
2 Though we pass through tribulation,

all will be well.

Ours is such a full salvation,

all, all is well.

Happy, still in God confiding,

fruitful, if in Christ abiding,

holy, through the Spirit’s guiding,

all must be well.
3 We expect a bright tomorrow,

all will be well.

Faith can sing through days of sorrow,

‘All, all is well.’

On our Father’s love relying,

Jesus every need supplying,

in our living, in our dying,

all must be well.

OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONALDATE : SUNDAY 1 JANUARY 2017THEME : STARTING A NEW YEAR

OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONAL
DATE : SUNDAY 1 JANUARY 2017
THEME : STARTING A NEW YEAR
Memorise :
Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit. Ecclesiastes 7:8
Read : Job 8:5-7
5 If thou wouldest seek unto God betimes, and make thy supplication to the Almighty;
6 If thou wert pure and upright; surely now he would awake for thee, and make the habitation of thy righteousness prosperous.
7 Though thy beginning was small, yet thy latter end should greatly increase.
Message
Welcome to this New Year! It is always good to experience something pleasantly new. At the dawn of a new year, hopes are renewed, aspirations are born and expectation are high. But when the ups and downs of life take their toil in the course of the year, many people are able to sustain the zeal and zest that they started the year with. Does this sound familiar? For some, it appears as if the events they experience in the course of a year are set up to completely dash their hopes. If this has been your experience, it shall be different this time around in the mighty Name of Jesus .
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” Jeremiah 29:11
As you take in the fresh New Year breeze, know for sure that God has something great in store for you which will unfold in the course of this year. Something huge is coming your way, so let your hope be fixed on the Lord. God wants you to end this year big and great, and to have your heart overflowing with joy. Remember that in the Kingdom of God, the end of a thing is always of greater significance than its beginning. Hence, the Holy Ghost in Job 8:7 said:
“Though thy beginning was small, yet thy latter end should greatly increase.”
Because some people start a new year with little or nothing, they don’t expect anything great to come their way that year. If you find yourself in a such situation, know that if you settle some key issues in your life, you can be assured of a greater, bigger and glorious year. First, start the year with God ( Proverbs 8:17 ). If you still living in sin, the greatest way to start this year is by going on your kneels, confessing your sins to God, asking for His forgiveness and inviting Jesus Christ to be your captain and pilot from now onwards. Also, you need to cultivate a personal relationship with God by studying the Bible regularly, fellowshipping with others in Bible-believing church, worshipping God and taking time to pray on a daily basis. In addition, daily ask God for direction, wait to receive it, and be sure to follow as he leads. Utilise all opportunities that come your way and give your best to God and His work. If You do all these, I assure you this year will end very well for you.
Action Point :
Thank God for gaining you access to this New Year. Let your thanksgiving be a daily offering to God this year.

HYMN : MY FAITH LOOKS UP TO THEE
1: My faith looks up to Thee,

Thou Lamb of Calvary,

  Savior Divine;

Now hear me while I pray;

Take all my guilt away;

Oh, let me from this day

  Be wholly Thine.
2: May Thy rich grace impart

Strength to my fainting heart,

  My zeal inspire;

As Thou hast died for me,

Oh, may my love to Thee

Pure, warm, and changeless be,

  A living fire.
3:While life’s dark maze I tread,

And griefs around me spread,

  Be Thou my Guide;

Bid darkness turn to day,

Wipe sorrow’s tears away,

Nor let me ever stray

  From Thee aside.
4: When life’s swift race is run,

Death’s cold work almost done,

 Be near to me.

Blest Saviour, then, in love

Fear and distrust remove.

O bear me safe above,

Redeemed and free!

OPEN HEAVENS DAILY DEVOTIONAL

DATE: SATURDAY 31ST DECEMBER 2016.
THEME: ACCEPTABLE SERVICE
Memorise:
Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

James 1:27
Read: Romans 12:1-2
12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
MESSAGE
The major difference between David and the other soldiers at the war front was simply the fact that David could not stand the insult and blasphemy against the God of Israel. He knew God so well, and he feared and honoured Him so much that he decided to confront the giant warrior called Goliath without any fear of losing his life. David, in this case, took the meaning of acceptable service to another level. It can be very painful when the authority of God is so challenged, you will want to do anything to defend Him even if it means doing so with your life. In 1 Samuel 17:23-26, Goliath came out, boasted exceedingly and asked; “Where is the God of Israel?” For as many as had no intimate relationship with God, this threat, challenge and disgrace meant nothing to them. But then, one day, a little boy who loved the Lord was there, he heard Goliath talk against his God and he got very angry. His love for God propelled him to dare this giant that was bringing shame on God and His people.
It can be very painful when you have a problem that has persisted, especially when you know that your God is more than able to solve it. People may even ask, “Did you not say your God can do all things? Why has He not done yours?” Yes, it can be painful, but you must be prepared to love God to the extent of not minding what people say about your condition.
In Palms 115:1-3, when the unbelievers were asking the psalmist: “Where is your God?” instead of being embarrassed or wallow in self-pity, he was not bothered. Infact, he began to make excuses for God because of his love for Him. He replied them: “Are you asking of my God because of this little problem? My God is still in Heaven. He is still on the throne and He cannot be dethroned. If you must know, my God does whatever He pleases and He is not accountable to anyone. Whether He does it or not, you cannot take Him to court. He knows the right time to solve this problem because your time and mine may not be His. Is it not for me? I am prepared to wait for His time; I am not in any hurry”. With that kind of answer, the mouths of the enemies will be stopped. How much do you love God? The proof of your love for God against all odds is the mark of an acceptable service unto Him!
Prayer Point:
Father, I commit my life to You wholeheartedly.

Psalms 140

HYMN 14: ONWARD CHRISTIAN SOLDIERS
Onward, Christian soldiers,

Marching as to war,

With the cross of Jesus going on before.

Christ the royal Master,

Leads against the foe;

Forward into battle,

See His banners go!
Chorus:

Onward, Christian soldiers!

Marching as to war,

Looking unto Jesus,

Who is gone before.
At the sign of triumph

Satan’s host doth flee;

On then, Christian soldiers,

On to victory!

Hell’s foundations quiver

At the shout of praise;

Brothers, lift your voices,

Loud your anthems raise.
Chorus:
Like a mighty army

Moves the church of God;

Brothers, we are treading

Where the saints have trod.

We are not divided,

All one body we,

One in hope and doctrine,

One in charity.
Chorus:
Crowns and thrones may perish,

Kingdoms rise and wane,

But the church of Jesus

Constant will remain.

Gates of hell can never

Gainst that church prevail;

We have Christ’s own promise,

And that cannot fail.
Chorus:
Onward then, ye people,

Join our happy throng,

Blend with ours your voices

In the triumph song.

Glory, laud, and honor

Unto Christ the King,

This through countless ages

Men and angels sing.
Chorus.
